From what I heard the dogs we have now are the ones us humans have been "domesticating" (dunno if that's an english word), basically it's the ones we've selected over centuries to be our companions. So they are "genetically" prone to being close to us. On the contrary cats have never been domesticated, that's why they're don't care for us as much as dogs do.
