you ever wonder why 90's r&b aged so well and all the classic songs from that era still go hard to this day?
R&B music has been around for way longer than hip hop so the foundation has been strong. But once the two began to mesh I think it got grouped into the same category and even at awards shows they were grouped together. Its all "urban" music.

its sad because I don't see it coming back any time soon. Artists with talent might as well build their following overseas. Beyonce has truly been a queen of an era of wackness. Honestly her sister Solange makes better music than her but because like hip hop, r&b songs have a short shelf life and artists use in the moment production.

Wouldn't say Rap is the main culprit, but R&B artists taking on a hardcore rap mentality didn't help.

Most black males came up either listening to hiphop or if they was into rnb Kellz was the blueprint,not R Kelly but Kellz.....so the rapping singing thing became the model and allowed for dudes who really couldn't sing to be succesful,and opened doors for dudes who couldn't really write poetic meaningful rnb music like it was done in the past to see success too...and I'm not saying Kelly can't do both,he the goat to me...but he was a bad influence on current rnb imo

Actually I started during the new jack swing era. Then Mary J Blige and Uptown Records era in the early 90's. But the difference was that r&b was still strong and a lot of good music was still being made. There was still that divided between rap music and r&b. Now its all the same.

frank ocean, miguel, weeknd, etc. theres a nice group of artists today. Plus that terrible edm/techno phase seemed to die out thank god, fukkin usher and neyo sellin out. Even Chris brown had the fine china song, and said his new album will be less pop we'll see about that.

Then of course the TGT album. I also think trey's been doin the only one really keeping it R&B, but i haven't bothered to listen to any of his newer stuff, i'm still listening to Ready

Some in R & B needs to have a "Control" type of song and make talented singers get back into making good music and not appealing to get sales. Plus, I hate profanity in R & B and there needs to be more genuine kind of love, no simping. Society is still on that "go to the club and smash hoes" phase, so it will take awhile till people settle down and love again.

Definitly,a lot of cats making the music now tho would've drew they inspiration from that late 90s early 2000 era,and looked at the blueprint for success in that time....which like u said definitly wasn't straight rnb by then and hiphop was the dominant force....that singing/rapping thing and way to much mixing of the two really was king by then....but now the rapping/singing ain't quite dead and younger singers still wanna be rappers too since they came up on that,but its sumwhat of a new wave....nikkas done switched it up and got on they singing over dark beats,makin songs that sound like some Phil Collins shyt now
