Seen these 4 recently
Biz Markie: Priceless footage and learned more about him. Never knew he was raised in foster care and as usually happens, no one wanted him to record what would become his biggest hit. 9/10, taking off a point because they put in this puppet Biz doll when they got into his sickness and hospital stay and it's a little off. His widow says after he passed he got sued and there's an ongoing fight over some of his music.
Beastie Boys: If you read their book this is the video version. Very well made with Mike D and Ad Rock on stage narrating. Cool little scenes with celebs roasting them from the audience. They sum up their experience on Def Jam: "Russell just wanted some white rappers he could get on MTV." They cover their entire career. 10/10.
Cypress Hill: This one was the most basic of these 4. Origin story, getting on, stardom, crossing over to cacs, and the fall out/fall off. Would have liked to see more BTS/backstage footage of all those legendary tours they did. Sen gets into burning out and leaving for a time, same with Muggs who left permanently. 9/10
Mixtape: Tony Touch put this together. Splits into 3 eras: the old school (park jams, Brucie B, and Kid Capri). The Golden era (Ron G, Clue, Tony Touch, Doo Wop) and the mix CD era (Whoo Kid, 50 Cent, Dipset, The Lox, Gangsta Grillz, Lil Wayne). A New Yorker made this, so you already know the West Coast mixtape scene is rudely ignored. 8/10
So much material to cover for future docs. I've heard Ed Lover say he's been working on a Yo! MTV Raps doc. Combat Jack/Juan Ep would be a good one too (the birth of Hip Hop podcasts).
