I remember Guru and 9th wonder saying rap will be classified as 'before control and after', 2 weeks later no one cared but for that time period, it was the most nut riding I had ever witnessed rap. It was think pieces and YT discussions ad nauseam

but that shyt was crazy. im not sure what lead up to it tho. just kendrick feeling like couldnt novody fukk with him at that point. and tbh he was kind right. I think maybe he felt like nobody was putting time&effort into the craft

What lead up to it was Kendrick told 50 Cent he was thinking about doing it and 50 told him go ahead and do it

In real time that shyt went crazy. Kendrick was basically crowned King from that day forward not just for calling out names but also for flipping the “Biggie, Jay-Z and Nas” line and inserting himself and also calling himself King Of New York. Thats what got people like Puffy upset.

Drake’s reaction also gave the verse continued life and relevance as did Jay Electronica’s.

Kendrick knew PRECISELY what he was doing. It was a great viral moment. Big Sean acted funky about it later on but HE was the one who premiered the song

It was a Big Sean leak. We were still waiting on a damn Jay Electronica album.

Most rappers were in their feelings. A few actually dropped responses. Jay Electronica was mad ppl forgot about his verse.

Every rapper who was born in NY dropped a response track :russ:
