I've only applied for a debit card through my bank and have always gotten it.

I have been denied credit cards. Unsecured credit cards are the worse. :snoop:
would i be correct in saying that as the holder of a debit card, you have successfully applied for a credit card in the past?

im not sure why this thread was made, but i win the thread if you have :dead:

I didn't really know how credit cards worked, but I always had a debit.

I can tell an embarrassing story, I asked my Dad when I was probably mid 20's how to get a credit card, and he said, just walk into the bank, and they will give you one, you've had an account there for years. So, I did that, not knowing they would ask for proof of income, pay stubs, and I was denied. I didn't have any proof of income, at all. Not a single pay stub.

I was heated at my Dad, but it's also my fault for just being ignorant to the process. I did google it, but the information on that kind of a subject can be so broad, and so vast, it tends to overwhelm me.

Just because you have an debit card doesn’t mean you're eligible for an credit card....right?
You’re usually given debit cards at banks where you have an active checking account. You can apply for credit card with the bank that issued that card but you can still be denied if your credit isn’t good.

Is that what this thread is about?

if you have an active checking account- the bank will designate you with a debit card. I’ve never heard of anyone eligible for a checking account get denied for a debit card. The bank may choose to put restrictions on debit card usage and daily limited withdrawal accounts if you have closed accounts with them in the past.

Credit Unions can deny you a debit card if you don’t have a checking account. They will let you open a standard savings account - but they will give you a limited access ATM card instead of a regular debit card.

You would be incorrect. Application for a debit card and application for a credit card are two different processes. Your debit card can be linked to your bank account and backed by, say visa, and perform similar functions as a visa credit card, but spending is limited to the money you have in your bank account.

A credit card is obtained based on reviewing your credit. It’s essentially a loan and you can spend up to the credit limit.

yeah.... but those aren't the same thing. you can qualify for a debit card and not be qualified for credit card. Even unsecured.

Credit cards are strictly based on creditworthiness, financial stability. After the 2009 credit scandals, it’s hard for just anyone to get a credit card if your credit rank or score is not above a certain number. I remember when I was in college, (pre-2009) the financial representatives and banks were basically giving credit cards away as long as you are a full time enrollment student. So many people were graduating with like $20k in credit card debt
:mjlol:
post 2009- you’ll be lucky to qualify for a Walmart credit card
:hhh:
You could be with a bank for 10 yrs and they will deny you off credit rating unless you have a substantial income sources.

What happened? What did I say??
Banks have an incentive to issue debit cards - that’s how they get money off fees and late fees, overdraft fees. I mean, who really uses cash these days - most merchants abc stores don’t even take paper checks either. It’s either EFTs, swipe or chip transactions.
