It's not really damaging to have characters reflective of your audience. However, as seen by this study, the American mainstream media is pushing the idea that only white people exist and they're certainly the only ones to exist in heroic, leading roles. The Spanish language media caters to their audience, which by and large looks like them in comparison to how the American Mainstream media does it. The American mainstream media exists to stroke the egos of the dominant power structure in Hollywood.
