Tyson unifying the titles post. Prision Is a very underrated accomplishment
No, it wasn't much of an accomplishment.
1. Tyson didn't unify the titles. He won the WBC and WBA titles, but not the IBF.
2. The title situation was a mess around the time Tyson got out of prison. The top fighters didn't hold titles, and mediocre guys were sitting on titles waiting for big money fights with Tyson:
Riddikk Bowe was the last undisputed champion. He was stripped by the WBC for not fighting mandatory challenger Lennox Lewis. Evander Holyfield beat Bowe in a rematch, then lost to Michael Moorer and temporarily retired due to health issues. Moorer was KOed by a 45-year-old George Foreman, who claimed the WBA and IBF titles, as well as the legitimate lineal title. Instead of fighting the top fighters, Foreman took a seemingly easy fight against unknown German Axel Schulz. The WBA stripped Foreman for not facing mandatory challenger Tony Tucker (why Tucker was the mandatory challenger, I don't know). Foreman won a controversial decision against Schulz, then was stripped by the IBF for refusing a rematch with Schulz. Michael Moorer ended up claiming the vacant IBF title in 1996 by defeating Schulz.
Meanwhile, Tony Tucker and Bruce Seldon fought for the vacant WBA title. Why on earth the WBA had a has-been in Tucker and a never-was journeyman in Seldon fighting for the belt is a mystery to me. Seldon won, and then sat on the title by taking on a tomato can until he could fight Tyson.
In a stunning upset, Lennox Lewis was KOed in 1994 by journeyman Oliver McCall. McCall's victory allowed Don King to regain control of a belt. King basically wanted to ensure control over the title until Tyson was out of prison so he could have Tyson fight for it in a big money fight. McCall defended the title against a 46-year-old Larry Holmes, then lost to a 34-year-old, past his prime Frank Bruno, who never accomplished much when he was in his prime. Bruno then fought Tyson.
So because of two shocking upsets (McCall KOing Lewis and Foreman KOing Moorer), the titles ended up in the hands of a bunch of mediocre fighters. They basically froze out the real top fighters in the division (Bowe, Lewis, Holyfield) waiting for a bigger money fight with Tyson.
