personally i plan to use it to store my music and movies. i have a laptop and a desktop and external drives for different media, which isnt the most efficient setup. i just ordered a HTPC so having a home server will allow me to stream to the HTPC as well as all my devices. the server can also run backups so i don't ever have to worry about dataloss.

Yeah, it's dope if you have multiple PCs in different rooms, especially if you're starting to transition away from having cable. You could keep the box in a closet or something and every computer in the house could access it.

I was thinking of building one as well.

I got mine a few years ago. Pretty much changed the game for me. I've got the 2 bay DS211+. The current model of that is the DS214+. Its a bit of paper but it's worth every penny. You can even install the Plex app on it.

They dropped the price to $300 :patrice:

In the process of upgrading mine now

Built a freenas box to test a couple months ago with old parts

1 thing I learned about freenas is they are ram hogs

The one above had 10gb and still struggled during read/writes.

Have a couple WD 4tb red's waiting to go in, a new cpu, psu, mobo, and 32gb of ram

Going to turn that POS above into a pfsense firewall & stuff it in the closet.

I bought an HP media server, even with it being set-up to have dual back-ups of everything I lost a shyt load of data when that fukker crashed. Still mad about it.
