I've got a 2005 Civic with 55k miles on it and my mechanic told me I'll need to pay about $600 to get it serviced once I hit 60k miles.

He said Honda recommends getting this service once you hit the 60k mark, but he also said the main thing they would be replacing is the timing belt. I'm a little hesitant to pay that much for what sounds like a small amount of labor.

I've looked around on other sites to find more about this suggestion and a few people have called it a ripoff. I'm going to take a look through the manual again to see what it says about this maintenance but I wanted to get some opinions from here too.
There's general tune-up stuff that you can do on your own.

Replacing your timing belt is not easy to do, but is doable if you have the right tools and a manual. You can forego replacing your belt up to 90,000 miles. However, look at your manual, every car is different. You do need to replace the timing belt at least under 100,000. If your timing belt breaks, you can royally damage your engine, as in it would require a rebuild.
Timing belt replacement is expensive because it is labor intensive. The actual timing belt, tensioner, and water pump are relatively inexpensive, around $150 to $200.

One lady said she does whatever her mechanic suggest though. She pays about $1,500 per year on simple maintenance :whoo:

Sounds about right for a timing belt. Don't know what these guys are talking about. Probably a good 3-4 hours of labor.

If its a non interference engine, I wouldn't be too concerned about the mileage though.

My manual says to replace the timing belt at 110,000 miles or 7 years, whichever comes first. Its about 7 years old so I think I'll get it replaced once I hit 60,000. I'm just not trying to pay that much money. I know a few dudes who could do it for less, but they might not be too reliable.

$600 sounds right? :damn: That's so much gotdamn money. I can afford to pay that but I need to learn how to do maintenance myself. I can do basic things like changing tires/oil/lights but I can't imagine replacing the timing belt on my own.

I bought my civic with 55k and I recently changed my timing belt myself at 98k. I didnt HAVE to but since I was changing the head gasket, I did the timing belt and waterpump since I had everything apart. When I looked at the old belt it still looked brand new, no cracks or anything. So its not nessesary.
Damn Breh how did you learn all of that :lupe: I'm at 82kmiles and I've been reading up on stuff like that to see when I'm supposed to change my timing belt and shyt bought my civic at about 62k milles 2 years ago.
Last year I got ganked at the dealer to change my front brake pads with some other bullshyt all cost me about 991.83$
The week I went to NY after this my cousin told me he could've done my break pads for me for way cheaper :sadcam:. I know now that I can do it too so I'll probably do my rear ones as well.

$600 for a timing belt job is about right. That is a 3-4 hour job for someone who knows what the hell they're doing. Timing belt job is very necessary- if your timing belt goes you will be in for a new engine (that will need a timing belt replacement off the rip anyway)

06+ Civic maintenance is cheaper because they moved to a timing chain which will last the life of the car.

So basically I could do it myself on my 09 right?
I bought all the stuff needed for a oil change that I will do next week and will do my rear brakes changing too.
I'm tired of them nikkas shaking my money :sadcam:

Oil change, yea you can do yourself. Brakes are 50/50.

Plus people don't factor in what they have to spend on tools. Between the impact wrench, all the sockets and ratchets, extension bars and weird little one off tools I have I've probably spent like $400-500 just on tools. And then there's the question of how much you value your time. Plus if you only have one car you better be damn sure you can get the shyt done before you have to go to work. You factor all that in and paying $100 an hour doesn't seem so bad.

Yeah I thought about it too, like I bought a car jack and stand and other stuff it went up to 200$ at at least, but thats cuz I just started, but as I go through Oil changes and change brakes in the long run it will end me saving cash I mean the brake pads were :dead: for me last year when I heard I could've did it myself. But yeah if I have to do shyt like this I'll make sure I do it early in the morning when I'm off with optionally a day off the next just in case.

I had a 2002 civic with 250k miles on it. I gave it away to my friend wife. shyt still run. I changed the timing belt once at 120k miles. Gave some dude I know $400 to do it. During the 250k miles I had two major failures. The air conditioner died, I drove without one for like 2 yrs :snoop:
Spent $1500 on that total cause I paid $500 to get it fixed in another state ....in Oct and didn't find out the shyt didn't work until like May when I already moved to another state. So I paid the dealer $1000 and they fixed it foreal.
Then I had the starter go out and I was stranded so I panicked and had it towed to the dealer. That was $700.
When I went to the dealer couple months ago for the airbag recall they gave me like 20 pages of print outs suggesting $3000 in repairs. :whoo:. nikkas must have forgot they had HONDA on they building. Started that bytch up and drove right home like wasn't shyt wrong with it
