There's general tune-up stuff that you can do on your own.I've got a 2005 Civic with 55k miles on it and my mechanic told me I'll need to pay about $600 to get it serviced once I hit 60k miles.
He said Honda recommends getting this service once you hit the 60k mark, but he also said the main thing they would be replacing is the timing belt. I'm a little hesitant to pay that much for what sounds like a small amount of labor.
I've looked around on other sites to find more about this suggestion and a few people have called it a ripoff. I'm going to take a look through the manual again to see what it says about this maintenance but I wanted to get some opinions from here too.
Replacing your timing belt is not easy to do, but is doable if you have the right tools and a manual. You can forego replacing your belt up to 90,000 miles. However, look at your manual, every car is different. You do need to replace the timing belt at least under 100,000. If your timing belt breaks, you can royally damage your engine, as in it would require a rebuild.
Timing belt replacement is expensive because it is labor intensive. The actual timing belt, tensioner, and water pump are relatively inexpensive, around $150 to $200.
That's so much gotdamn money. I can afford to pay that but I need to learn how to do maintenance myself. I can do basic things like changing tires/oil/lights but I can't imagine replacing the timing belt on my own.
I'm at 82kmiles and I've been reading up on stuff like that to see when I'm supposed to change my timing belt and shyt bought my civic at about 62k milles 2 years ago.
. I know now that I can do it too so I'll probably do my rear ones as well.
for me last year when I heard I could've did it myself. But yeah if I have to do shyt like this I'll make sure I do it early in the morning when I'm off with optionally a day off the next just in case.
