It depends on how you look at it if you looking at impact. This is a hot take but Jay or Nas should replace bigg to me. Big is dope but his output is way too low compared to them.

This is futile. There are way more than 4 names that deserve that level of reverence. And undoubtedly there are going to be biases regarding eras, regions, and “type” of rapper. Let alone is it just skill, impact, popularity, longevity and amalgamation of all?
As of 2025 there’s only 2 people I really consider better than Black Thought. He’s legitimately the perfect MC, but there’s no way I can objectively put him over Jay.
Jay has the body of work, impact, sales, influence, rapping ability.
Jay earned his spot despite his flaws. He’s there.

saying Jayz isnt better than kool g rap is laughable at best. When you talk "better" you have to talk albums and songs not just lyrics. Now I would argue jay is actully even a better MC than kool g rap at his peak but if youre talkign albums songs impact it really isnt close
black thought isnt in the same level as jay for ANYTHING outside of bars...bro discography matters, hits matter, classic albums matter. how many classic albums solo does BT have? you can say 2 with the roots if youre being favorable. BT ever do features? 15 albums? 4 classics? no bro so just because jay had popularity doesnt doc him either.
ghostface is the only argument you could actully have as he has the catalogue , however when it comes to impact and place in hip hop its not that close importance wise but ghost you could argue as hes in my top 5 all time but id never have him there hes not transendent like the other 3 i named
