I'm just going to re-up this old post from the Trump predictions thread. So far, I'm two for six.

I think the Trump presidency will go down in history as a Republican mirror to the Carter administration. Trump will either lose reelection or choose not to run for a second term. Like Carter, Trump will be remembered as an idealistic "Washington outsider" who couldn't get enough insiders to buy into his vision, and who surrounded himself with people who didn't grasp DC politics as well as they should have.

I don't think there will be an economic crisis like the Great Recession during Trump's presidency, but there will also be no great recovery and no major re-shoring of jobs. Regular people won't feel any positive change in their pocketbooks, and the situation for the poorest of the poor will probably get worse.

Trump's presidency will be marked by:

1. Several major foreign policy blunders which will undercut his image as an effective deal-maker (just like Carter).
2. The failure to properly repeal and replace Obamacare. No matter what happens, Trump faces a lose-lose situation. He either repeals too much and people lose their coverage, or he doesn't repeal enough and "Trumpcare" will be ridiculed as Obamacare-lite, demoralizing those in Trump's base who wanted a total repeal.
3. A slow rhetorical shift away from building the border wall. Pursuant to Trump's executive order, DHS will wall off additional parts of the border, but it will come nowhere close to the kind of wall Trump promised and ultimately stall after a few-hundred feet due to major cost overruns. The deemphasis of the border wall will be a major theme in the media.
4. More shootings, either by would-be domestic terrorists, mass shooters, or cops using excessive force. Trump will mishandle them, no matter the type.
5. At least one major firing of a cabinet-level official. As difficulties mount for the Trump administration, the relationship between Priebus and Bannon will become more strained. Most establishment Republicans will side with Priebus, but Bannon will ultimately win out, resulting in some kind of high-profile dismissal of a Priebus loyalist, or of Priebus himself.
6. A modest midterm election loss, followed by a Democratic wave in 2020 (just like what happened to Carter). The 2018 midterms will not change the basic makeup of Congress, but the Democrats who will be elected will be far more vocal and radical than people are used to. This will set the stage for a Democratic wave in 2020, where Republicans will lose the presidency.
