I thought the same thing for most of my life.

Never even looked for jobs here while living in DC. But there are a lot of Mills and Plants in Louisiana. There's a lot of Government and Contractor jobs in Shreveport - Bossier (Barksdale). I've made great money thee. Few bases on the West Bank. Supervisorsand Dept heads and leads make really good money. You probably won't come out of college making bank useless you have real tangible technical skills or just going to have to work your way up. I just started a job at a Mill, as pretty much the IT manager. 95k salary, 3 wks pto. My own office and my boss works out of Washington State.
I was gonna ask about the plants and mention them but wasn't sure if they still had them down there. But again those jobs are coveted and hard to get into especially in some areas in Louisiana (cough Pollock cough). Government jobs right now though are kind of shaky, but good to hear things working out for you and you have a good gig. I'm about the same rate here in Houston in the medical center. Property taxes getting outta control.

Not sure where you're from, but Dallas (just like Houston), you're most likely not going to be able to work if you don't have wheels.

Now, Dallas does have DART train that goes thru a good amount of the metroplex, but if you don't live upon that trainline, it won't help you much.

It's just the way it is here and most of us here see it as normal. I drive 40 miles one way to work and it takes me almost 1hr and a half. It's not ideal but it is what it is and I'm just thankful and grateful to have a good job, bc I know there's people who don't have jobs right now.
I’d blow my brains out if I had a 3 hour commute daily. I’m trying to cut mine in half and it’s only 1:15

yea this was the crazy part to me
The former #1 poorest major city, Philly, has concentrated areas of deep poverty. Those videos posted in here might as well be favelas, specific zip codes that are remnants of red lining and super crime ridden and poor. Because of the size, density and configuration of Philly it's easy to keep the deep poverty to certain areas. Houston is so spread out the poverty must be spread out over much greater areas

:dead:
This the kind of stuff people say when someone is moving to the undeveloped outskirts of Accra. No way americans should be having to prep for all kinds of infrastructure failures in one of the biggest cities in the country
:manny:

That's the game down here. I have a portable one (outdoors for hunting trips) and one attached to my house. It's just what it is here in Texas. I'm aging myself but been that way since Alicia in the 80s. Electrical grid is ran like a cartel down here.

We can but we are taught to go out in the world and make it instead of go out get the skills and bring them back
yeah, im in nyc ...i look at all the road work and construction fields....how are indians and mexicans able to do all this work and no black people do this work in numbers..we need to get into civil engineering and be versed in building...just like we need more lawyers..and key word stick together. I can go in more.

Man I've been preaching it for years. All this construction going on and you see who not included in the work crew. It's disheartening. We need more electricians, plumbers, and carpenters as well. I've seen young cats learn to weld and make tons of money. I try to tell these younger cats but its in one ear out the other.

I didn’t say Philly didn’t have ghettos. Still has less poverty per capita.
Yup, Philly is more dense and is an older city.

Philly might look poorer compared to Houston that has a lot of sprawl and poverty isn’t as concentrated.

You’re pretty much describing all major southern areas. If your from the south it’s known from birth that you need a vehicle to get everywhere. Transportation could be better but it’s not as bad as you’re making it.
If you live inside loop 610 in Houston, inside loop 12 in Dallas, inside the perimeter in Atlanta, you can try to make it work without a car. It’s not recommended but it’s doable. Outside these areas, good luck and that’s a big problem. Because those that do not make enough are stuck. Can’t get around unless you have a car because a bus is not as reliable out in the outer areas than they are in the inner areas.

It’s one of the reasons why I refuse to move back down to the sunbelt now. The options are limited.

Being from Louisiana, we always looked at Houston and Dallas as the land of Milk and Honey. Still do, that's probably changing now.

In Louisiana opportunities to make 20$/hr or more are so limited, we're still able to come to Texas like immigrants and work together with other Louisianians and make a better living than in Louisiana.
Facts.

My fam is mostly from deep East Texas and Louisiana (Marshall, Waskom over to Caddo Parish up north; Beaumont etc to the south). They all came to Dallas and Houston because of the jobs and stayed.

That's how DFW/Houston grew so much back in the day. Still get a lot of folks from other parts of the South but now it's mainly transplants from Cali, Chicago, NYC etc.

Southern folks could jump right into Dallas and Houston but there's a lot more growing pains with the folks from up north and the east/west coast. They want shyt to be more like where they came from but state government is trying to go the opposite way.

They don't exist as seperate entities in states which are actively trying to stop them.

For example, when LA or chicago try to pass a tenants rights local bill, nobody in in the state government gives a damn because they agree. When a city like ElPaso or Austin or houston does the same thing The state legislature passes state code 204.902 which directly prohibits them from doing so Because Republican landlords and corporate real estate holders profit from disenfranchised tenants

Another example is, When the same blue cities in red states try to pass education reform to make the local population ccompetitive, by funding more local schools taxation then chapter 42 of the texas education code is written to specifically restrict them from allocatting more money than the stingy and corrupt Republican state legislature allows them too. When New York City does a similar thing Kathy Hochul supports it. It's well within her power to stop more funding to schools in the exact same way as red state governors, but she isn't a moron and agrees with having an educated population of young peop

How's that working out?
I asked a teacher how much should we spend on education? Her answer was "more".
Give parents choice of where to send their children and let the funds follow the child.
Democrats are property owners, too.
Really.
It's easy to manage and distribute wealth when you don't have to earn it.

Well thats because Louisiana is a Republican shythole with not one blue city.

Most of the south is.. so people who never been anywhere, hear about cities like Houston and ATL being “black meccas” and move out there, usually without a legitimate plan other than to be hood famous somehow.

Louisiana isn't that bad, you just have to get off your azz and hustle. A lot of self employed and small business owners winning here.

Financially people from Louisiana will move to Texas and accept some of those 20$ an hour jobs yall laugh at and work our way up to lead/management and be level better than natives in 10 years.
