Ballerina at 91 million worldwide.....

forgot the studios only get half of that. Budget was 80 without marketing. Marketing was about 45 million apparently so they need like 250 milli to break even.

What's at the Movies this Weekend? (Jun. 20-22)

Last weekend I was unable to do the usual Box Office wrap-up. It was a big Sunday for me. So I'ma combine it with what is playing this weekend.

We have a couple of new entries with Pixar's Elio playing in 3,750 theaters. It was just last June that Pixar's Inside Out 2 opened with $154.2M, which was the studio's first $100M opening weekend since 2019's Toy Story 4. Elio is only expected to do $20M+.

The other wide release is the long gestating 28 Days / Weeks Later sequel - the aptly titled 28 Years Later. I've actually never seen either of the first two movies. Deadline has this opening with $28-30M.

The How to Train Your Dragon live action adaptation is coming off of an $84.6M opening weekend, which was the 4th biggest weekend of the year. It's made $113.7M so far and looks to win the weekend again.

Lilo & Stitch is coming off of $15.7M last weekend. Its $371.7M running total makes it the 2nd highest grossing movie based off of a movie and it's Disney's 2nd highest grossing movie adaptation - behind Aladdin.

A24's Materialists had a pretty strong $12M opening off of a $20M budget.

Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning has totaled $169M after a $10.5M fourth weekend. Dead Reckoning made $151.1M after the same 26 days in theaters.

Ballerina made $9.7M last weekend, which was 60% drop from its first weekend. But at least its $45.4M running gross has passed the first John Wick's $43M total. :lolbron:

How 2 for 2 Train Your Dragon: Weekend Box Office Results (Jun. 20-22)

28 Years Later tried, but in the end, it wasn't close to How to Train Your Dragon's $37M second weekend. After 2 weekends, it's totaled $160M, making it the 7th highest grossing movie this year. Coincidentally, How to Train Your Dragon's $160M is less than this year's highest grossing movie, A Minecraft Movie's $162.7M opening weekend.

28 Years Later opened with $30M. That's far and away a franchise best, beating 28 Days Later's $10M. And it outgrossed the combined $19.8M openings of 28 Days and Months Later. It was still $21.6M shy of Final Destination: Bloodlines, another long dormant horror franchise, opening. Still, it's already the #4 highest grossing horror movie this year, just $400K behind Heart Eyes' $30.4M.

It looks like Pixar is back to their regularly scheduled programming, after the anomaly that was last year's Inside Out 2. Elio is the new flop on the opening block with $20.8M. That is Pixar's worst opening ever. :ehh: but maybe it'll have legs like Elemental which is now Pixar's third worst opening at $29.6M. That was one of the great turnarounds in recent memory, as Elemental finished with a $154.4M total after a disastrous start. I guess it's possible - both movies have identical A cinemascores. Right now it looks like it'll be a struggle just to make it to $100M. :picard:

At least Disney has Lilo & Stitch to pick up the slack with $9.7M. At $386.7M and counting, it's the second highest grossing movie this year, $11.5M behind A Minecraft Movie's $398.2M 31-day total. And it's already at $910.2M worldwide. A Billy looks guaranteed unlike A Minecraft Movie, which has petered out with "only" $953.6M.

With a $178.2M running total, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning has passed M:I - Dead Reckoning's $172.6M. That was thanks to a $6.4M fifth weekend. The Final Reckoning has matched Dead Reckoning's $178.4M inflation-adjusted total. And with that the up-down franchise pattern continues. Look at this every-other entry consistency. It's like Rick Porcello's era alternating up and down every year for 7 seasons.

And through 31 days, The Final Reckoning has a 14% lead on Dead Reckoning's $156.1M. I'm looking for The Final Reckoning to final at somewhere between $196M-$203M.

The timing on Elio couldn't have helped, coming between Lilo and Stitch ND HTTYD.

Solid opening weekend for 28 Years Later, hopefully people continue to check it out.
