How are yall maneuvering office politics with these cacs?

Me and four other people were promoted into new roles last year.

This year, a single Sr. Manager role opened up, and we all went for it. Most of us had 5 years, 6 years, 7 years of experience.

They gave it to the cac with the least amount of time there (2 years) :wow:

When I asked about it, the response was I didn't network enough.

Cacs are a trip. If you see a broke, homeless cac on the streets, do not give them shyt! The country is made for them :wow:

Because they can go back to spinning their bullshyt and licking a$$holes to get promotions instead of actually working and leaving everyone else the fukk alone

Only way I've been able to really progress is changing jobs every 3 to 4 years. Im on year 2 of this one and its the highest paying and most senior of my career. If I'm not promoted by end of next year, I'm out. Internal promotions happen through fake bullshyt that I dont have the time and patience for.

This is the way for BM.

At a certain point it you hit the ceiling and you see the boys club. No matter, how many golf trips, hockey games, happy hours, etc. It's usually set it stone.

You should always be interviewing.

That role was already decided before it was opened lol.

Bet they've been tracking that dude for that role since they hired him.

They just had to do a little show for the rest of the office :lolbron:

Probably shared the same college football team, holds secrets, etc. But they usually position you for a particular role way before YOU even see it.

They know how long you'll be here and how far they'll promote you.

But I don't play the office politics. I didn't even know the extent of how high this department could go when I joined and now that I know what it is entailed I just congratulate the others that are advancing. I willing to just stay at my level and earn more through bonus performances and yearly raises rather than climb ladder
But I got other sources of income though lol. Major factor

This. I know one dude at my company that made VP at 29, something that takes other people until at least 40-45 to do.

Seen people make Senior director 8 years post college and some people 15 years.

How to network with your boss...
Were you at your boss's birthday party? if you missed it what gift did you give him? do you attend his church? When was the last time you took him out to lunch? Are you acquaintances with any of his friends outside of work, since they can be indirect referrals for you? (this one is easy to do if you stalk his LinkedIn or social media)

How to network with the people that influence your boss...
Were you engaged in any volunteer or social activities with any of the other department heads? Do you have friends in hr? How much of a fixture are you at happy hour?

How to network on a way that helps your department...
Alternatively were you able to leverage your own social network to bringing clients or business for the firm? Or were you able to leverage your own social connections to the reduce the cost of your business unit if you weren't in a production role?


The name of the game is likeability and visibility. Your performance or work tenure is irrelevant beyond entry level. The natural advantage that cacs have is
they inherently have the same interest so they'll gravitate to the same things. You have to work a little bit harder and do more research as a black person to be on the same llevel. It's how a random cac can form a social bond with your boss over Green Day , the local brunch spot, golf, or black Sabbath. Effectively speaking, when an opportunity pops up you need to be the first face in their mind. This is how you keep being out maneuvered by white people.

As a concrete example, I once finnesed a promotion after only one year in a position,
when I realized a few department heads and HR members used to frequent a taco restaurant after work. I wedged myself into that restaurant , and when a new position opened up less than 2 months later I was the first name. Would you believe me if I told you I leapfrogged other white people that have been in that department for years longer than me simply by being at that taco restaurant?



I wouldn't even blame this on race so much as I would blame it on human connection in general. If you were working at an all black firm in Detroit or Atlanta or Baltimore you'd still be playing the exact same game to get above middle management. Except you would be schmoozing a black leadership team.



But there are other ways to get that promotion if you dont like networking. But they take longer.

For example
I've been telling people for years one of the best ways to get around having to schmooze them if you weren't a social person is to just get that position in a different , smaller company and then lateral back in after you have experience in the new mgmt role.

The reality is that there's sometimes a limit to where we can go at a certain company, job, etc. Start looking for the next job and keep moving.
