Unpopular opinion….I actually enjoy Bruno Mars little protégé Anderson Paak’s music maybe even more than his.

People prioritize entertainment over talent now. It’s also a streaming era. Outside of when I started a vinyl collection late last year I hadn’t bought an album in years.

We toss Spotify and Apple that little $15-$30 a month and stream everything.

In the 50s/60s Black were just starting to learn group economics. I think it started with MLK's (let's all work together and share) ideology. We've had welcoming arm to any group at anytime since.

Then the Rappers came thru popularizing and telling us we aint unless we got Adidas, Nike, Hennessy, Prada, Gucci, LV, Cristal and Dior. Most of the rapper never received a dime for endorsing these brands.

As a group, we're not smart as alll financially. We don't support or protect what we have. We allows others to make more than we make. No way we should be cheering for Eminem. We have to be selfish like everyone else.

Anderson Paak has been in the game for the better part of a decade. He is his own artist.

With that said Black music was honed in the church and once that stopped it dropped a couple of levels.

The other problem is and I am not passing judgment as much as I uses to. Parents are not passing down the music of the past like mines did with me.

And I grew up and came of age in the late 70s and 80s so there was still a huge tradition of actual Black bands where you know the name of the singers the keyboard players, guitarists, drummers, bass etc.

We now have 2 generations who haven't heard any of that stuff in exchange for mumble rap, watered down R&B and a 'vibe'.

He's def got songs I like a lot but I wonder whether a black artist could get the push or label support needed to become a Bruno. It seems like there's a level of gatekeeping at play to ensure the white (or non-black, in Bruno's case) artist who does retro black music gets support and the black artist who does retro black music is regulated to club bars. Adele is extremely talented, I can't take anything from her, my mom LOVES her. But can anyone imagine a black woman artist being allowed to be graceful, reserved etc on a major label?

To be fair we all watched what happened to H.E.R. She got the push, heavy. Was in all the commercials, performed at all the awards shows, won major awards and nobody gives a fukk. Black people don't care, white people don't care. She has her niche fanbase, she has a moderate hit that gets her streaming but she's prob never going to blow up. Maybe we don't value that level of talent anymore, from black artists.

This exactly a black artist doing similar music to the artists you named get less of a push.

Forgive me, I didn’t know who he was before Bruno Mars then I got into and start checking his catalogue.

Dude is dope and makes dope music.

Not as popular as Bruno though, but I think Andersen is criminally slept on.

This is kind of the point why isn’t Anderson even half as popular as Bruno?

I want to hear the Black artist that people feel is at Bruno Mars's talent level that isn't getting a push that came out at around the same time

I think Anderson is kind of an artist's artist. Like he is just now getting his flowers from the larger public but you are right everyone who listens to his music goes 'this is fire' or :ohhh:.

The other thing with Bruno is that he made his bones as a pop star before going into that R&B lane.

They don't make similar music. Paak hasn't really delved into that pop realm heavily like Bruno. He certainly has/had the machine to do it but refused to do so. Look at the singles he's dropped solo since signing to Interscope.
