If you're serious about doing this, I also recommend using cronometer.com. you can check the sugar and carb content of most ingredients and foods before you eat them and store your own recipes to monitor your macros.
Normally, no sugar means no added sugar.
Technically, sugar is in damn near everything, but some are in such small quantity that the companies don't legally have to add it in the nutritional info

Actually, I add sugar to the grits on purpose. Lot of people don’t know it’s a lot better sweet than salty. It’s something I saw my sister doing years ago and I’ve been doing it since. She actually cooks it in milk (instead of water) and then adds sugar.Sugar in the grits - I know that![]()
