He was off to a good start... "Sugar Hill" was a gold-selling single and had him all over radio & TV that summer...

It just never translated to him becoming a full-fledged solo star. Sometimes, the wrong label, wrong choice of singles, etc. just undoes an artist. That happened to AZ. Also, he could rhyme like a MF, but he just did't have that it factor to make him stand out in that era.
