That shyt is just masterful. And Lincoln never even went to school either, he learned to write that way on his own. No way in hell a president today could get away with language that poetic and self-reflective and deep in meaning.

They did, but powers have been expanded, safeguards and separations eroded... add to that a much more diverse citizenry than anyone could have anticipated and...

Perhaps. In much of the "third world," there is a much thinner wall between the people and the state, which is why their governments so heavily use brutal tactics to crack down on dissent. They realise that "the people" of the state are far more willing to retaliate.

I dont think they saw congress enabling the executive en masse to this degree
Yeah Senators used to have much more pride in the Legislative Branch. Co-Equal branches of government and all you would think they would see their position as just as prestigious as the president and even more so because combined they represent America better than one person could ever. It’s turned into the Republican Party enabling everything though.

That’s part of the reason it was created. But they also didn’t want a bunch of ignorant, uneducated people choosing the president.
