I've seen similar threads in the early 00s. Posters used to complain about the same thing.

I'm part of this generation....smartphones and the like has completely destroyed my attention span, and I'm one of the smarter individuals of my general age range (standardized testing wise). I used to be able to read books on books on end with no prob, now it'd probably take me a legit week to finish a Harry Potter book :manny:

Technology is such a double-ended sword. For the older generation, it's helped them alot as they've been able to use it and not depend on it (this isn't the same with everyone as some 40 and 50 year olds are more dependent on technology than some 20 year olds but I digress). I honestly know teens, now ADULTS I guess as they're hitting 18 and moving on from high school that have NO substantial goals for their futures. My old high school, there may have been a good 1800 kids, and probably a good 200 if that, actually has career paths that are worth a damn and won't be menial as hell.

Naturally, you gonna have nikkas that back they way into a rap career or put in the work for a pro sport (Julio), so intelligence ain't on the forefront of their mind. Just make moves happen and get to where you gotta get. But cutting corners and being a lazy fukk ain't gonna work out for everyone and I think the future economy is gonna reflect that. With the population rate being larger than it was in previous generations (of course), we might be straight, but you still rather have more people going for the upper tier jobs from the jump than dikking around and ending up settling for menial jobs.

TL;DR nikkas are willingly stupider than they were, technology being a huge reason why

That being said, I don't think lyricism is PHASED out, per se. There are more and more artists attempting to say REAL shyt in their albums, but are occasionally having to dumb it down for the sake of being digested, i.e Drake and Future.

Drake has diminished the quality of his verses for years now, and INTENTIONALLY drops a lyrical track every once in a while just to keep those old Drake fans sustained. Even then, most of them still recognize he took the Hov way out a long time ago

Future's shyt actually looks pretty good on paper, but it's just his voice does get in the way sometimes when listening. I don't think it's intentional like bytch ass Thug, because it has improved from where he started, but it does show up every once in a while. You can tell dude puts some real thought into his lyrics though

Lyricism just ain't the trending songs, and I don't think it'll ever be like that again. Don't expect to see "The Blacker The Berry" or "Prisoners 1 and 2" as the number 1 hashtag on Twitter b, no matter how incredible they are. Unfortunately, the biggest supporters of these standout tracks tend to be critics, who are the same people diehard hip hop fans (such as I) despise. It's almost a paradox, you want these songs to be appreciated, but by the masses and not the critics, who are biased alot of the time.
