Socialism is what they called public power.
Socialism is what they called social security.
Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.
Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.
—Harry Truman, 1952

Not a socialist. But the broad brush demonization of ideologies that seek well-being for the majority of people and our planet is perplexing. At least have look at the merits to see what works.

wantofaname.bsky.social
Well they ARE socialism, the question is why does that make them bad? (because it reduces power of the rich over the rest of us by having safety nets )

While campaigning for governor of New York in 1930, FDR and his wife Eleanor Roosevelt saw 1000's of people in 60's/70's starving, homeless in the streets because banks went broke taking their life saving with them. FDR promised Eleanor never again. As president, In 1934, Social Security was born.

I’m doing a study of Eleanor Roosevelt as my study for the year. She is the most progressive woman of her time & was a bi-sexual/lesbian & why someone doesn’t make a movie about this most interesting & intelligent woman, I just don’t understand!!!

Jean Stapleton was very enjoyable as her in a 1982 TV movie, but we need more .... a lot more !!!

Socialism is what farmers claim to hate as they vote against it but take a government payout.

Socialism is why I can’t afford to live in a country.

figment-of-a.bsky.social
Yes. I have called social security an unamerican and socialist idea because it literally is and it’s appalling we have any socialist infrastructure after the Nazis. I have benefited and others have to. But many more are dependent on gov now due to it which was never supposed to happen.

America is un-American.
What Nazis have to do with the topic is beyond me...

My favorite lately is that "Government is bloated and is not ran like a business!" No shyt. I haven't heard of the last time libraries, firefighters, police, or government in general was made to MAKE A PROFIT. They are made to GOVERN PEOPLE WITH SERVICES. Services FOR EVERYONE not just the rich.
16/35

fogelberg.bsky.social
And actual socialism.
The military and police, public highways and roads, food and drug regulation, clear water and air, etc, etc, etc.
The US is and always has been a MIXED economy.
Isn't economics taught in high school anymore?

And as Harry knew, socialism and communism were used interchangeably by the Birchers and other right-wing loonies.

There are numerous democratic socialist countries around the world with fabulous living standards for almost all of their citizens, but I can't name a single unregulated free market oligarchy kleptocracy or strongman dictatorship or exteme right wing theocracy that doesn't seem absurdly fukked up.

Yes and it’s the same with the stock market. If you exclude the tech companies it goes down a lot. If you look at just the true backbone of the economy we are in critical danger and have been for awhile.

It's amazing how thoroughly brain washed Americans are about social policy that is quite normal in social democracies like those in Europe. The Yanks have tried to influence the rest of the world to think the same way with some success in the UK and Australia.
32/35

gsproffit.bsky.social
This summarizes Gramsci's "cultural hegemony" ideas.
The wealthy control the means of cultural indoctrination.
Americans are indoctrinated to believe in being sodomized by the rich and to feel grateful for it.

Of course. They think that Capitalism is the best way because it keeps them on top. And while Capitalism can be good, it is the greedy rich that have caused most of our problems

What about corporate subsidies? What about the government contracts to corporations?
