When threads like this get made or get bumped, you just gotta laugh. Some of constant proponents of socialism/communism on this site are the same ones advocating to; vote for Kamainla, vote for Biden, vote for Hillary, vote for Obama.

What facet of the Marxist leftist tradition would justify such fervent advocacy for oligarchic corporatists?

Imperialist that forever increase a globally dominating military force that no other nation is even trying to compete with. Domestic law enforcement that out spends a country the size of India's actual military. Authoritarians that desire a more robust carceral state. Fill their cabinets with their Wall Street cronies.

Yet somehow, voting for these machine liberals that will do nothing to challenge the status-quo can, in any way, coexist with this alleged socialist worldview.

The problem is democracy requires funding in order for any side to win. You must guide the general public to your cause like sheep. Only the side with the most herders or the most skilled herders normally wins. Such herders wont work for free. So You need the "oligarchic capitalists" as a necessary evil because they bankroll all the campaigns of any significance.

So you effectively have Democrats who advocate for socialist policies that benefit the common people and must advocate for the few select corporate donors to their cause.

You can't really make a comparison to Republicans who are openly hostile to any form of socialism that helps normal people and supports all types of corporate socialism (except for the companies that support Democrats).

You would have to restructure democracy in the country in order to have socialism without corporate patronage . You also face a conundrum where any attempt to restructure campaign finance by democrats will be fought by both Republican corporate interests and threatened Democrat corporate interests . So @motion order What you describe is an ideal world, whereas the reality around you is the practical one.

Neoliberalism, state repression and "decolonial studies" can explain OP's title

Great find. Might have to check out his book :whoo:

I didn't know "afropessimism" was an officially coined phrase or movement. But im famiar with the concept he describes from folks like Claude Anderson who often hint that despite whatever legal or economic hurdles black people struggle to climb ; they still remain at the bottom of most positive metrics.

Even 90s thought leaders like Amos Wilson have a bit of that philosophy when describing the monkey branching new (nonblack) immigrants must make above black people for the overal economic system to flourish.

About afropessimism, yeah it really seems to me that the 2020 George Floyd episode enshrined the concept and made it pretty popular. I think that's when I started to hear about it for real.

I'm currently reading the book btw, I finished the intro. I'll tell you if it's good!

I was initially interested in it because I figured Black marxism just kinda withered away after the assaults it suffered from imperialist states and the spread of the neoliberal paradigm. But I had never heard that the rise of decolonial studies (and then/now afropessimism) in academia may have played a factor in diminishing the importance of the Black socialist or marxist tradition.

I did notice as others did that prominent Black thinkers, figures and movements like Frantz Fanon or even MLK and Malcolm X generally had their marxist/anticapitalist thought scrubbed off their legacy but I had never made such an active link between that and the current state of Black academia.

The author also proposes a sort of retrospective of Black marxism in the book so as to extract what's salvageable from it and I'm always curious to hear about that.

My own thing is that on one hand, Black folks contributed so much to marxism that they forced it to evolve in the West and to not only tackle seriously the race issue, but also re-analyze its profound links with capitalism since its birth. A bit like feminist marxists did with gender.

On the other hand, due to the factors I mentioned above, but also imo due to resistance (and racism) amongst orthodox marxists when it comes to the primordial importance of race, Black folks generally tend to be either indifferent or ignorantly hostile to socialism and such currents of thoughts.

That's too bad because that shyt is also ours.

I love when MAGA goes into my comments to sound smart and detailed and then just list out socialist and communist economic principles 🤣🤦🏻‍♂️

@Emmy
Whenever they describe what they hate about communism they always describe capitalism instead 💀

2/20
@Jules 💎
so far right they turned left

3/20
@timbletop
the right yearns for communism.

4/20
@Manchildalorian 🆘 🇺🇸 🆘
They all want communism. They just don't want it if it's *called* communism.

5/20
@God
Maga isn’t smart enough to understand what communism actually is

6/20
@Orbizz81
I walked my MAGA leaning family member into realize they are on the side of Democrats the other night. The silence was so gratifying as they processed they are on the wrong side 🤣

7/20
@Sextina Aquafina Tulpa ∅🏳️‍⚧️
Yeah 😂, suddenly Maga is anti-consumerist, pro collectivism, pro taxes and pro hard labor. Do you think if we swing it a certain way we could get them to like walkable cities, public transit,

8/20
@JIC
China does not need us but I’m pretty sure we need them

@Walkmack4 💙🇺🇸💙
There is a small business owner on here that is being killed by tariffs and he voted for Trump. He said he was aware of the tariffs, but thought the infrastructure would be in place first 😳

10/20
@hotcries
I was just thinking about this. All of the things these working class voters want are rooted in socialism. They still don’t grasp how republicans align idealogically. They don’t want to help you.

11/20
@beckc2424
Like shouldn’t the factories have been built first for this to make sense??

12/20
@Ok
They basically said, let’s end globalization and try out industrialization again. Maybe nect week they’ll start training toddlers to clean chimneys again

13/20
@Nerd Goals
Trump is a jarring combination of incompetence and ill intentions.

14/20
@SN2BPHD
With what federal employees? They keep firing the people they are saying would do all of that.

15/20
@tinaray_81 🆘 🇺🇸
It’s oddly satisfying to listen them switch narratives daily at this point.

16/20
@Match907
"Control Over Thee, Not Over Me" would be the title of their MAGA-festo.

17/20
@Red
Exactly!! They want less government control but want more government control…

18/20
@Kat
And education. Now we need to find trade and vocational schools to develop skilled workers. Seems like something the Dept of Education could help support…

19/20
@Mary Barrios
It’s Fascism because the companies are still privatized but, according to horseshoe theory, they’re pretty much the same so they’re really playing themselves either way

20/20
@AfroF0x
Socialism and Communism are 2 concepts that MAGA won't understand but will label anyone who disagrees with them as. It's kinda funny when they really yearn for it

Socialism is what they called public power.

Socialism is what they called social security.

Socialism is what they called the growth of free and independent labor organizations.

Socialism is their name for almost anything that helps all the people.

—Harry Truman, 1952

Not a socialist. But the broad brush demonization of ideologies that seek well-being for the majority of people and our planet is perplexing. At least have look at the merits to see what works.

Well they ARE socialism, the question is why does that make them bad? (because it reduces power of the rich over the rest of us by having safety nets )

While campaigning for governor of New York in 1930, FDR and his wife Eleanor Roosevelt saw 1000's of people in 60's/70's starving, homeless in the streets because banks went broke taking their life saving with them. FDR promised Eleanor never again. As president, In 1934, Social Security was born.

I’m doing a study of Eleanor Roosevelt as my study for the year. She is the most progressive woman of her time & was a bi-sexual/lesbian & why someone doesn’t make a movie about this most interesting & intelligent woman, I just don’t understand!!!

Yes. I have called social security an unamerican and socialist idea because it literally is and it’s appalling we have any socialist infrastructure after the Nazis. I have benefited and others have to. But many more are dependent on gov now due to it which was never supposed to happen.

My favorite lately is that "Government is bloated and is not ran like a business!" No shyt. I haven't heard of the last time libraries, firefighters, police, or government in general was made to MAKE A PROFIT. They are made to GOVERN PEOPLE WITH SERVICES. Services FOR EVERYONE not just the rich.

16/35
🇺 fogelberg.bsky.social
And actual socialism.

The military and police, public highways and roads, food and drug regulation, clear water and air, etc, etc, etc.

The US is and always has been a MIXED economy.

Isn't economics taught in high school anymore?

It's amazing how thoroughly brain washed Americans are about social policy that is quite normal in social democracies like those in Europe. The Yanks have tried to influence the rest of the world to think the same way with some success in the UK and Australia.
