Nothing is the default, it's the absence of something. Much like cold is the absence of heat, dark is the absence of light.

I'm more inclined to think that "nothing" was always the state of things, but like a previous poster said, nothing isn't really nothing. And "before" the big bang, the laws of physics may have not existed as we know them. I don't know.

i think the mystery of it all is because we're thinking of the universe's origins within the context of our own existence, applying our understanding of "physics" to a reality that may very well operate according to an undefined set of rules far removed from what we're able to comprehend. our physical reality is not THE reality, as the universe recognizes it. it's merely one infinitesimal part of a greater REALITY we have no means, at this point and time, of grasping.

pretty much. i also think the first thing to come into creation were laws/codes, predating any matter or anti-matter, or at least developing simultaneously as the matter/anti-matter.
