Weaves, conks, perms, etc. Literally invented to make black folks hair closer in texture to other people's. Not saying other ethnicities don't use them too, but let's not deny history my guy.
We thought our hair was the reason we weren't accepted in the TOP jobs in the workplace.... Which was true because even white boys in the 70s 80s 90s had to rock the white version of Clean Cut
For non advanced degree and good career brothers..... Idk why them nikkas started cutting.
Many of the drug dealers rocked short styles... The Nation of Islam ( which is one of the top pro black influencers) and Malcolm X rocked clean cut styles. Black Doctors and lawyers wanted clean cut.... And the hundreds of thousands of Brothers coming out the military keep the clean cut unless they became homeless drug addicts so ..... Basically most of the best amongst us had the fade so we wanted the fade. Then NAS Jones and some other rappers had it. And folk like Busta Rhymes were looked at as eccentric
After the Jeri curl brief fad .... We rocked a combo of Goofy high tops, some twist and braids and most had regular Haircuts.
These days people are exploring long styles. I have 4 sons.... 1 has a short fade, two have those dumb high short twist w the fade sides type of styles that are the most popular today ..... And 1 has locks
Parents born in the early to late 80s are more likely to allow their children to explore whatever style.....
And locks and twist are what black boys are chosing right now.

used to have a big ass fro in highschool. but the maintenance is what turned me off from it, not america. Actually grew out a smaller one last year during all the work from home stuff.

Im not doubting you. Sure African societies were doing some kinds of hair styles and many things long before the rest of the world, and Afr-Ams often needed to use hair treatments to 'fit in' certain areas.
My main point was that those treatments in the western world originate from the perception of inferior African hair texture.
I have enough education to link you scholarly articles by black writers and personal accounts by black folks throughout American history that would support my point if need be.
I usually sport a high taper afro fade.

Wiz had nikkas in my school walking around with a blonde patch dyed into their hair when I was in high school
