I am not arguing Michael Jackson being clowned. He was clowned for decades, but this wasn't something that was brushed aside in the Black community. Eminem got much more flack for this than he did the race tapes. Nobody was banning his videos for that, but he "Just Lose It" pulled for this.

What's the spin? Nobody blinked an eye to the Will Smith shyt then, and if somebody says otherwise, they lyin'.
The Mike shyt got very little press... it is what it is. I'm sure it's something to be regretted now, knowing in hindsight that MFs shoulda cared a lot more about MJ bein' respected, but it wasn't some widespread outrage from Black people about Eminem portraying MJ with a fake nose falling off in a video. I know we can all sit around now and act like in '04 we all united and jumped to Mike's defense, but I'll just put it like this: a lot of people remembered how much they really loved Mike on June 25, 2009. 2004? not so much.
And if only a handful of folks went up to bat for MICHAEL JACKSON in 2004, how many you think got defensive for Will Smith in 2000? The takeaway from this is that we should remember to always stand up for our greats when these white folks try to disparage them. But let's not pretend Mike wasn't catchin' all types of jokes by '04.

MJ will forever be one of the GOAT's. But the black community was mad that he wouldn't take a stand on race for most of his career. A lot of other artists would be outspoken and speak out against racism and police brutality, but MJ kinda always toed the line of being neutral. But when white people turned on him after that shyt with the kids blew up, then he wanted the community to back him. That was basically some OJ shyt, lol.
Mad underground MC's were killing MJ in the 90's too. The whole skin bleaching thing didn't do him any favors. To this day, people still talk about him being a self-hater and not wanting to have black features. So he's been a bit of a punchline since the Bad album cover.
L-Swift from the Natural Elements said, "Give me the microphone and roll back. MC's are like Michael Jackson, 'cause they can never get their soul back. I'm in Control, black. Like his sister, Janet. You scream when I slam it, I'm Off the Wall, so understand it". And this was in like '95. A lot of us didn't like the whole turning himself white thing. Before that, dude was worshipped on a different level. After that, people started clowning him. A lot. Even though he was the shyt!
This actually got a lot of press from every major network beyond just the music networks. This was covered by ABC to Fox News. And yes, it was widespread outrage.
I don't know what this even has to do with MJ being clowned. Of course he was, but who is denying that. This was going on before Eminem ever dissed him. Even then, Michael Jackson was still loved. Dude was clowned during the peak of his career for everything from his speaking voice to how eccentric he was dressing, his hair. The clowning got progressively worse with each change he went through. In the 90's everybody cracked on Mike. He was still loved though.
And yes this was a bigger deal than what a lot of you are making it out to be:

His camp let him slide, Shock value and beef was the way they got headlines back in those days. That's why most people didn't like what Em did. Stevie Wonder even called him out. But MJ won in the end since he bought his masters. That showed how much his white fanbase didn't care about this, they worshipped Em way too much. Funny how this was the downfall of Em and he took a hiatus after a while.

What I don't understand is how people act like you can joke about someone and still hold them in high regard. Comedians make jokes about their mothers and fathers and it could be the most disrespectful joke ever, but they still love their parents. I saw Lavell Crawford tell a vulgar joke about his mother with her in the audience.
That said, I don't see how Katt Williams pretty much roasting MJ in his routine means he couldn't celebrate MJ. I don't see how pretty much all of us who are Black haven't told or laughed at an MJ joke, but still bumped his music.
