Above the fray.
So was frank sinatra. Why did he sell more than sinatra? The girl were crazy for sinatra when he became a solo artist in the 1940s.
Ok what about the white artist that came out around the same time as elvis: bing crosby, frank sinatra, dean martin, roy orbinson, eddie fisher

I think his only white contemporary was Jerry Lee.
Once rock n roll was allowed across radio airwaves those earlier acts were washed

teen white girls made elvis and the beatles into top selling acts

We don't know that he really did. Before soundscan.:yeshrug:

Whatever he did, it was less the MJ and The Beatles.

MJ received the award for the biggest selling artist of the millennium, not Elvis or The Beatles.

What's more impressive is that MJ put out far less music than everyone else. He put out an album every 4-5 years, while other acts were releasing albums multiple times a year.

Easy to overlook the fact that he was one of the very first absolute superstars in America. His movies were smash hits, his albums sold out, his tours sold out. Hell, breh nearly single handedly eliminated polio in America by becoming the face of the US government's first big push to get people vaccinated against diseases.

Of course not. He was a great entertainer though and I understand why he blew up. (White) people hadn't seen anything like that before, of course they went crazy over it. He packaged a bunch of shyt black people came up with and introduced it to the white mainstream...that's always a blueprint for success but he was one of the very first people to do it.

I like his singing on more rock n roll tracks but HATE his voice on ballads and country shyt...just sounds corny to me. I like some Elvis songs...it's hard to hate on some like Hound Dog...but overall? I just don't like his music. I understand why it was huge tho.

:wow: blassic movie

Elvis and Jerry Lee Lewis put a white face on Black music. Record industry was able to market him in a way that they wouldn't/ couldn't the Black artists with 100 times the talent and charisma that Elvis had.

This.

Whites always liked our music, but they had to put it in a package that was "acceptable" for the times. Elvis could sing. If you ever heard any of his gospel music, dude was talented....definitely more than a lot of white artists. Throw in some hip-shaking and he gives the average 1950's teenage white girl an outlet for her hormones. Swag that mimics a black man without actually being a black man.
