well it depends what you mean by superior, but europeans lept ahead of other people after the industrial revolution, and through science and technology, if any other groups want to catch up they (or we) will have to go the same route

And they aren't superior. leading something doesn't necessarily make you superior. me and this cac i work with have people who work for us that are smarter, more technical, and more creative than us.

I studied the EU and had a, interesting history course, and the teacher basically told us that Europe being small actually helped them (us, since i'm half-Belgian) a lot: they had to trade more with each other, and with other areas of the world. That led them to incorporating all the knowledge from Africa, Asia and the Middle-East at a high rate, probablt higher than other regions. Add to the fact that weather is quite easy in Europe (you have a couple floods and harsh winters every now and then, but hardly any huge natural disasters) and you have TONS of rivers (and seas) to transport goods/people/ideas, and there were geographical advantages in Europe. Strangely enough, if you add the black plague that wiped out like the half of Europe at one point, they HAD to become more modern, since they could just depend on extensive workforce, they needed it to become intensive, as opposed to other regions of the world. And thus, modernisation.

And indeed, opportunity: white people did not invent paper (Egyptians did), nor gunpowder (Chinese did), nor maths (Arabs did) nor...we can go on and on. What they DID do is see the opportunity those inventions could represent, and went all out. I read somewhere that China once considered sending boats across the Pacific, and they would've reached America before Columbus. Given that China was vastly superior to Europe at that point, they would've set shop there. BUT, China, much as Germany, sees its imperialism as "continental": both have always first tried to unify their inner space, and then conquer neighbouring countries. Niether has ever been really big on going overseas. Probably because their continental mass is big enough...unlike for example the Netherlands, Portugal, France, Gb and Spain who HAD to conquer oversea territories to be relevant.
