I always wondered why there isn’t more outrage about these shows in this climate. I definitely remember when Maury had a bit more substance, and now it (and the majority of these shows) are just an endless cycle of us being painted in the worst light: infidelity, irresponsible sexually, deadbeats, violent, dishonest, obnoxious, predatory, thieves...

There’s an episode today where Maury has a black mother with 4 kids that’s giving them a lie detector test to see which one stole $5,000 from her.

Maury, Springer (Judge Jerry now), Paternity Court with Lauren Lake (which has decent moments every so often), and Wilkos (probably my least favorite)...it’s all showing our most irredeemable aspects DAILY for large blocks of time. They sprinkle in lower-class members of other groups, but it’s a lot.

I don’t expect much to be done, but it seems like people speak on the VH1 shows more often than this stuff which seems to be shown on a larger scale at a way higher clip.

1. Springer was threatened with cancellation in 94 if the ratings didn’t improve and fast. They promoted Richard Dominick to Executive Producer, who proceeded to shark Ricki Lake’s format plus add in fukkery in an effort to get the younger viewers

2. The gamble paid off when Springer blew up a few years later and eventually took the ratings crown off Oprah for a small bit of time

3. Jenny Jones and Maury saw this and revamped their shows to be fukkery tabloid shows. Maury been on TV forever, but only talks about this incarnation of his show and says its been on since 1998 (when he revamped it for NBC)

Maury boiled his show down to the best 3 or 4 topics...paternity tests, cheating lie detector tests, guess if its a tranny pageants, and bad kids, I think now it's all just like the paternity tests and lie detector
