What has Ryan been doing?

I think he was a producer for Lie to Me and The Unit right after The Shield. Most recently he had Terriers, which I heard was dope but I never got the chance to check it out. Canceled. The Chicago Code and Last Resort got cancelled as well. He's also part of the failed Beverly Hills Cop pilot. Right now I don't know what he's up too.

In the first three episodes there's two huge explosions, a carny gets his balls chopped off, 2 shoot outs, a random dude gets axed in the skull in a 7-11 for literally no reason, Jax bangs out some ho after asking her to bang out some other dude for the club...etc etc.

I enjoy sons of anarchy for what it is and I am entertained. I love his writing style because he knows how to manipulate an audience. When he wants you to hate a character you do. Then a few scenes later you are routing for them. That helps when your main protagonists are scum bags and killers.

I hear what you're saying but IMO there's a difference between that and taking on the fukking IRA, Chinese mafia, DEA, FBI, CIA, NSA, and every other government agency on earth as well as every street gang and drug cartel.

This. I rewatched the pilot a few days ago and the shyt was awful. It was literally the same outlandish, wild shyt we see now. The opening scene with Glennn Plummer is so fukking bad. Bikers in full cuts show up to a crime scene with dozens of police, firemen, investigators there and not a word said. Plus they find bodies and they leave it up to Plummer to get rid of them like no other sensible arson investigator wont discover two dead burned bodies in a cellar

Sons got too damn ridiculous during Season 4 and the beginning of Season 5 I had to push the eject button. It just got more unbelievable with every episode and had me with the face.
