How did the eastern conference get so weak?

I don't think the power of the conference during the regular season means that much seems as if the east gets a few chips here and there.

shytty draft luck more than anything. It just seems like whenever those top prospects come out, the west always has the top pick. If the Hawks get the 2nd pick in 07 then the entire landscape changes. All that said, the east isn't as bad as people try to make it seem. There are more defensive oriented, slower paced teams in the East. The west has the run and gun squads. Run and gun will get you more regular season wins but the slower, more hard nosed basketball will get you farther in the playoffs.

How significant is conference depth? For all the talk about how great the West is you would think there would be greater diversity in who comes out of that conference. There was a 13 year stretch starting in 1999 where only 3 different teams came out the West, compared to 9 in the East. Seems to me the cream will always rise to the top.

Put Spurs or Lakers in east and this is never even a topic.

yea.

one thing i noticed is that the west harbors alot of teams that accumulate gawdy regular season records, that you know arent serious threats to the chip.

East conf. teams traded their good players across country in the late 90's.
Shaq from Orl to LA
Kobe from Cha to LA
Sheed from DC to Port
CWebb from DC to SacTown

Not to mention Utah already having Stockton and Malone

Seattle having Payton and Kemp

Rockets had Dream, Barkley, and Drexler

Twolves had a young KG to build around
Spurs drafted Duncan to put alongside Robinson

Phoenix had JKidd and McDyess

East never really recovered

East has always been worst league shyt i think jordan was a sixth seed with a 30 and 52 record in his second yr

But i think to answer the question when an east team travels to west coast they are usually playing games 1030 so they might be sluggish while the west comes to the east and they r playing games 430 mentally that time difference gives west an advantage while the east gets no advantage

The east has ALWAYS been a weak conference, even during the MJ era. Teams with losing records were making it to the east playoffs even back then too. Outside of the Bulls, Knicks, Pacers, and heat the east was weak
the Jordan bulls made the playoffs with 30 wins
