How did the mafia and other criminal organizations not feel guilt/remorse for what they did?

Why didn't the mafia and other criminal organizations not feel guilt/remorse for all the killing, robbery, etc that they engaged in? How could they be involved in all that without breaking down mentally?


Weren't they afraid of an afterlife when they died with the possibility of going to hell? It's just not worth it, going to hell for all that they do. Why couldn't they realize they would go to hell in the afterlife?
