I think very few people realize how quickly it happens. For example if you were holding your breath or dunked underwater one would be able to last a few minutes before losing consciousness.

Opposed to breathing in any gas that isn't oxygen will cause one to lose consciousness almost instantly (5-10 seconds).

Breh there are literally hundreds of cities still in the vicinity of volcanoes. shyt, even if you arent volcanoes are one of the most violent occurrences on Earth. You can be miles away and still get touched. Vesuvius was a powerful eruption. Pompeii just got it the worst.
