The fact that people are dismissing this reasonable question says a lot about society. People love to be the guy that already knows just so to clown the guy who asked the question…. But after watching that video, I’m pretty confident that at least 90% of the population doesn’t know why there are 24 hours in a day, 60 minutes in an hour and 60 seconds in a minute.

Not gonna give you nikkas a damn history lesson but it started mainly with the Industrial Revolution. With technological advances in the railway in particular, the time had to become more accurate as “time” was different in different regions. But OP you’re right, the time wasn’t standard worldwide. It was typically 2-3 hours ahead or behind depending on where you lived

So essentially it’s the result of a somewhat random base system used to track the earth’s revolutions which was then adopted to track time. And we could just as “easily” have been in a different system if it had been more widely adopted.

Right. Base 10 always made more sense to me. Even as a child after learning about the metic system, it annoyed me that we used the imperial system instead of the metric system because it made so much more sense to me.

I took a History of Math course in college, it was awesome. I would recommend it, because it would give you a good prospective on Math. It showed the history of Linear Algebra, Algebra, Arithmetic, Trigonometry, etc
