the blame should go mostly on wyclef
he got cheap and cute with the production

fugees had a few dope cuts ... but the score was overrated and overplayed to hype it ... mostly carried by lauryn
wyclef was just a terrible choice as a producer and canibus (who I love) put out good albums (TFLDPR,MM,FA, PLI, RTJ, FWTBT, LL, COT, Mic Club was decent) but judging from some projects with other people... he isnt the most aware at picking beats either... so it does fall on him for trusting Wyclef and buying in. He gets alot of hate but its more like lack of support... he has albums that are ahead of their time "Fait Accompli, Melatonin Magick" so he's held up his end of the rap bargain... people complain about beats and shyt but :sas2: I dont see them supporting Apollo Brown and Ras Kass, so how far does that really take you if the fans arent willing to purchase your music? Nobody jumped to buy Kurupt and Dj Quik's album either, even knowing it had amazing production.

Can-I-Bus isn't nearly as bad as people make it out to be, but yes, the production didn't fit Bis' style and Bis' lyrics carried the album. It's still miles ahead of some of the shyt he would later release (CTHS, Hip-Hop 4 Sale, that first album he put out after the Dizaster battle)

It's one of the most poorly mixed albums I've ever heard in my life. Despite this, I still come back to tracks like Get Retarded, Buckingham Palace, Channel Zero, Niggonometry, I Honor U

Some rappers just can’t make great music consistently enough to put together a great album.

I feel like Eminem is in there with Canibus. Both can rap circles around the competition but when it comes to putting together a great album you’re probably not gonna get it. You might get something entertaining in the moment but revisiting it much later it won’t age well.

Dr. Dre taught Eminem how to make songs do, and how to use his voice to sing hooks

The Wylcef album had Canibus best songs it from a format perspective

The production was too pop for canibus, sound like some black eye peas shyt, but that was before their time so Wyclef was just ahead of the curve with his vision

*sigh

2000 bc had better production in terms of matching Canibus (most notably C Quel and 100 bars)...stuff on Can-I-Bus would have been better suited for someone like Common (who ironically had a collab with Canibus probably better than anything on Can-I-Bus in "making a name for ourselves")

Also Wyclef's pre Can-I-bus Canibus tracks (most notably howcome) were better than what was on the album.

Also mixtape freestyles (like the infamous Clue "I speak in frequencies dogs would have trouble hearing" freestyle) and guest spots (most notably 4321 and beasts from the easts) were better than what was on the album.

It's also not just how the production sounded in a vacuum but rather how it sounded in comparison to albums like Capital Punishment or Hard Knock Life.

It's also about...did it have anything for radio? Did it have anything for the club?

Also certain songs had like a huge disconnect between the hooks and the verse content like I honor you. Some had a really lazy and uneven song structure like second round ko. Some had a format that wasn't even really rapping like that such as Negronometry (which Canibus rejected the devil pie DJ Premier instrumental for).

Also some tracks like channel zero were Frankenstein monsters with the lyrics from Grand Decepticon and the instrumental (or at least part of it) from the original Ground Zero.

Wyclef produced is album horribly.

He started beef with one of the GOATS of rap, and that ended terribly.

He tried to make a comeback battle rapping, and literally pulled out a note pad..in front of MC Supernatural :scusthov:
That last part means nothing to me

So then move on....:why:
Let me clarify

Battle rap is a live performance art that the combatants have to be very dedicated to.

Before the Canibus/Dizaster battle you had someone like Meek Mill claim to want to jump in the ring...like it was thing to do. Even people that used to battle were comfortable assuming they could adapt.

Canibus was the first "industry rapper" to do it before Budden gave up after getting booed in response to Hollow blatantly playing the crowd against Budden, Shady and the whole event, or before Cassidy got slaughtered by Arsenal and whoever else.

Canibus was starting off alright...and ended up in a situation where he couldn't perform what he did.

I still don't know why he got arrested, how he got injured or everything that happened to him. But I do know that there was no precedent for a studio rapper battling yet. No precedent for pulling out a notepad. He didn't know how people were going to react. He loves bars so much and so do a lot of his hardcore fans he thought people would want to hear them regardless of them appearing in a notebook.

Every battler has bad nights but his ONLY night battling was a bad night.

It probably would happen to anyone in his shoes.
