I think this thread has been done before , but to keep it a stack I’m not aware of many extra, unconventionally named ( but stereotypically “black sounding” named) folks who are black that hold — or have held — really high ranking government or private sector positions ...


There was a pretty high ranking US Attorney named Nefertiti if I’m not mistaken ... that’s all I got

Can’t even find her anymore tho ... maybe she went into private practice .


Would be dope if someone compile a list tho .

It's not the name that is the problem it's the stereotypical circumstances in which the name comes from.

Lakeisha she's coming from a broken home with a single mom, no real daddy.

If those names were synonymous with mom and dad and morality we as black people would not have this problem.

Why black people keep p*ssyfooting around this I dont know. Single black mom's and baby daddies running away have created this problem which is a damn shame.

Two parent black homes shouldn't be worried naming their children "ghetto" names and have enough faith in their parenting that their child can overcome that minor obstacle. It's the single black mom's who need to do the hiding.

This is an old conversation. I'm old enough to have gone to school with AA children born during the Black Power era who were given African ethnic first names................and those who were born to parents who were part of the Nation of Gods and Earths..who were given new age constructed names.


TRUST ME when I tell you that employers lump both sets of names in the same category, and those names are lumped in with all the other names that fall outside of English/Christian names. Ethnic whites ANGLICIZE, change their names first and last names, or go by their middle names because of that.

I know you'd like to think that the new age names are the only ones that get singled out but it's not the case.
