Do y'all play by ear? Do y'all use a plug in? Do y'all already Kno how to play keys etc?

I find the Tonic (The First Note of the scale) and play the scale of the key to verify it.

For instance if something is in "C"

You will play C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C- and the notes will all be in tune (

I match the bass notes by ear using a piano app on my phone...

If it's something more complex where the key changes I'll loop a section....and do the same thing

Spectrum analysers will also let you know exactly ..if you have no other means or the sample isn't 100 on pitch...

You can hover over the frequency of the peaks or use a frequency to note conversion app after looking at the peak (e.g the peak of a bass note) which will be clearly visible since low frequencies produce the most energy in our audible range..

In general the fundamental will be the loudest peak ....get Voxengo Span... It's free.

I use the piano find out what notes make up the melody of the song I'm sampling
The notes of the melody will tell you what the scale and key is.
If there's no melody in the part you're using, use notes of the bassline

Let's take All I Do by Stevie Wonder:

G# F# G# B G# F# G# G#
You made my soul a bur ning fire

G# B C# D# D# F# D# C# B
You're get ting to be my one de sire

That melody contains these notes (in alphabetical order):
B C# D# F# G#

Each scale has 7 notes, one to represent each of the 7 letters of the musical alphabet.
I got 5 of the notes. Only two are missing.

This melody is built from the B Major scale:
B C# D# E F# G# A#.

The missing notes were E and A#

So if the melody is built from the B Major scale, then the song is in the key of B Major

The chords in the key of B Major are:
BMaj7 C#min7 D#min7 EMaj7 F#7 G#min7 A#m7b5

@head shots101 , good question and good responses!
I can’t read a damn note so my shyt is just by ear :russ:

Check this free Analyser..

It gives you note values...

So even in the full spectrum of a song you can check the bass peaks ...write them down and you'll already have an idea of what key it's in and the progression.

If you use FL

You can use the Wave Candy Spectogram and up the resolution and hover over the notes and it will read out the note value as the song plays...

shyt you can even use filters to section of a frequency range so that it only reads out that ....so low pass heavy and you will only see the bass notes..etc..
