How do you determine if you can afford something?

For me I have a very simple method.

If I can't buy it twice and still pay my bills on time, then I don't buy it.

That's pretty stringent. I usually determine if I can afford something if I can pay for it and not have it alter the way I pay my regular bills, money I put in savings, etc.
