Whatever line of work you are in...join a local or national trade association. Attend their social gatherings/meetings.conferences. Allows you to network and possibly be mentored by people who are in your line of work but who are older and have more experience.

Exactly, why would they want to help some nobody? The idea is just like people who say "make some friends", in reality you know they dont want to make friends with someone who doesnt have any.
I think it is possible to make it alone, you just gotta make it work and have a plan. Thats why a lot of people who did it all by themselves always say they had no help.
