It helps if you actually have a set of goals in your life. Write down the things you want to achieve, and how you'll go about achieving it. If it means going back to school so be it.

As long as you're on the road to achieving it, what other people are doing with their lives won't bother you cos you know your own future looks good. On the other hand it's miserable when you have no ambition in life whilst everyone around you seem to be doing really well. I know the feeling.

What industry are you in?

You may have to take a minimum wage job till you get on your feet....

I recently graduated in May so I'm fresh on the market, looking to enter into the legal field down the line.

Thanks everyone for your posts of encouragement.

Just realize you measuring your life and success with the wrong units. Life ain't a race.....its all about getting to your ultimate goal. And sometimes if you dont get there fast enough...its because you weren't prepared to handle what it has to offer. Ex. see how miserable some of these so called successful people really are.

I'm going through a bit of a rough patch right now and it's that much harder when it seems like everyone else is eatin' good. I try to be happy for them but I can't deny the very human emotion of envy and disappointment at times.

how do you stay positive?

Distance.

You gotta take time away for your regular routine and get yourself back together. It's not to say that you're not happy for whoever, you're just not happy with youself at the moment and that's cool.

Seasons change...as long as you're wanting/trying to make progress, know that it's gon come. In the meantime keep trying to better yourself daily. You'll be i-ight niggga :obama:

How do you know that those "others" aren't struggling in other areas that may not appear on the surface?

This is also true, but tbh I kind of feel like threadstarter, and shyt's been going for a while. It seems that not only am I not where others are, but I feel like I don't even know where I wanna be...had so many changes in my life that it feels like I don't know my true self anymore...so I think that for me it will be like 3 weeks "acting like I'm ok" and one week of feeling way down :manny:.

TS try to focus on what makes you happy (if you know what that is) and do your thing around that, I think my mistake was focusing to much on "serious" stuff and neglecting what I actually like. The "serious" thing never really worked out, so I've kind of missed on both. TBH I never felt as good as when I was a volunteer with some pocket money with just enough to eat but loads of time for music/reading/writing/travelling.

Don't focus on the accoplishments of others. Focus on where you want to be in life and take the necessary steps to achieve those goals.

I can't say so... I'm doing hella good compared to my real friends, sometimes I think they feel like you. Just smoke some bud and think really hard about why you're failing and everyone in your circle isn't, I bet I can tell you but I will let you smoke that bud and think about it yourself. Good luck in your future endeavors...

Not an attempt to thread jack but I have been going through similar experiences as the TS. Only differences are I graduated some time ago, with 10+ years experience in Finance and IT and had extended unemployment (over 2 years). I am not where I want to be but between bouts of :to:, I try to stay active (gym, volunteer, etc.). shyt is tough out here. Nonetheless, the feedback in this thread has proven helpful:obama:. Thanks, brehthren.

This is a great piece of advice that I am so taking to heart today (and every Today that follows). I am committing to not allowing anything overshadow the things that are working and going right. And, of course I want you to join me and make the same commitment.

Why?

Because we’ve got great things we are committed to doing and we don’t want anything unnecessarily weighing on us and holding us back. We know we want to live a fulfilled life, be happy and continually have great things flowing our way.

So, that means we’ve got to always make sure we are looking at everything from the right perspective. We can’t let the “negative committee” in our minds convince us to primarily focus on those things that are “heavy” and are perhaps not currently working out as we would like.

It’s not that we should brush over serious issues or pretend they don’t exist. We should do our best to find a resolution and deal with whatever it is that we don’t feel is working. However, we can’t allow “what’s not working” to be our dominant focus and overshadow everything else that is working. That will never get us to where we want to be.

Recognize What’s Already Working
You’ve already got so many things that are going well for you. If you don’t think so — then you probably should think about it again. There are things you have accomplished. There are good people in your life. There are things you are currently doing really well. And, there are absolutely even better things coming your way. Don’t overlook that reality or minimize what’s working.

If I didn’t know any better, I would believe our brains are hardwired to primarily focus on those things that aren’t working or the things that are currently weighing on our minds. Those things seem to quickly rise to the surface and can absolutely monopolize our attention.

But, the reality is that our brains are not hardwired wrong — we’ve just got to choose what we focus on and how we frame things in our minds. This takes intent and a commitment to not allow the wrong type of thoughts to continually run through our minds uncontrolled.

Today is the day to commit to controlling our thoughts and always have the best mindset possible.

The Possibility of Today
1. Create Your “What’s Working Today List”: Create a list that you can update everyday with the things that are working in your life today. Don’t overlook anything – the little things definitely count. Create a new list every single day so that you can assure that everything that is working will be at the forefront of your mind. This is easy to do and will only take you about 3 minutes. It’s amazing how doing something this simple just gets your mind instantly focused on the right things.

2. Take a “Time In” to focus on what’s working: If you start feeling discouraged or are in need of a “pick me up”, take a “Time In” for 60 seconds and reflect on all the things that are working today. Take 60 seconds to yourself and read your “What’s Working Today List” to get your mind focused on the right types of thoughts again.

3. Recognize that your mind plays games. Once you realize that your mind plays games and is always ready and willing to focus on “what’s not working” you will be less apt to fall into the trap. Catch yourself every time your “negative committee” starts acting up and reel it in.
