how do you, or how have you, go about explaining what it means to be black to your children?

I could've made this thread at any point during the year but while I remember....

What are some key points nd key things to go over with your child and at what age do you think it's best to educate them

Explain what though

Well books can be a good way of going about it, lots of black oriented children's books. Plus my dad tended to be pretty blunt with me on certain things. If this was me, I'd explain how life in America is a competition or game and you have to be the best, then segway into the part where you have to go twice as hard if you black. If the kid ask why then you have a chance to explain. Always throw in the disclaimer that all yts aren't bad, and that they best bet is to just do good in school and stay outta trouble so they don't end up in a bad situation in like and by now I've brought it back to a neutral point and they ask about that and we can have a more general discussion. In other words, if its a young kid I'ma pepper the info in with a bigger overall point so they can recall it when that subject comes up later in life. :ld:

I can't stunt I've given a lot of thought on how I'd raise my kids if I were to have any. I can already tell I'ma be a cool ass parent. :pachaha:

You start young & have to instill a strong sense of who they are & where they came from. What you don't want to happen is not to address things & for them to have Tiger Woods syndrome and feel funny about being African/Black.

The first time I had to have a real conversation about race with my son is the Trayvon Martin case. He started to cry because he was scared. " Mommy why do some people just want to shoot little black boys just because they are black?"

My son knew he was black and had already started to learn about black history but never had an encounter with modern racism. We started with him early just knowing who he was, that he was black, how many colors we come in because he is in a mixed environment. Then about history for his age. The thing is they have so much access to information and the media has fewer filters. We watch the news and talk politics as well so I know he is soaking it all in. Somethings He knows before his time because of that and we have to talk about it.
