I rate albums based on mainly replay value. Lyrics, production, and song quality are an after thought really.

For example, Kendrick's album is dope, lyrics, production, song quality, it has all that, but for me, it lacks some replay value, so it sits at an 8.1 out of 10 for me.

Well, to stay on topic, I rate an album with 3 standout songs and 10 trash songs also better than an album with 13 average songs. The standout songs on album really do it for me

That's my approach. Because I feel like: 'what's the point of releasing an album with no standout songs?'

It's like the artist didn't try on any level whatsoever.

I saw someone post that Nas's Untitled is a 4 mic album. The first thing that came to mind is "how", considering there are zero standout cuts on that album.

In fact, Nas has zero standout cuts on any album since God's Son. So right off the bat, his albums post-God's Son can't be more than 2.5 mics if we're being generous.

And I say this as a Nas fan.

When I rate albums, I look at number of standout records. Not number of decent or mediocre cuts. An album with 3 superb tracks and 10 wack as fukk tracks is gonna be better to me than an album full of 13 average joints.

How many cuts of Nas's discography post-2004 has he added to his live set that genuinely gets the crowd as hype as his 'stamped' material? Zero.

Illmatic - 5 mics
It was Written - 3.5 mics
I Am - 3 mics
Nastradamus - 2 mics
Stillmatic - 3.5 mics
Lost Tapes - 3.5 mics
God's Son - 3 mics
Street's Disciple - 2 mics
Hip Hop Is Dead - 2 mics
Untitled - 2 mics
Life Is Good - 2.5 mics

Imo, Nas and Jay-Z. Nas comes into the picture because his unreleased discog is the best in hip hop history. At least from what I've seen and heard. Lots of high quality records that weren't on albums.

Jay-Z has bangers for days. You could easily do an "all Jay-Z" party and it wouldn't get boring. Personally, I think Jay-Z dropped great (not amazing, but great) albums consistently up until Black Album. Every album had 4-5 standout cuts. That's pretty damn good.

Wu as a whole have a great discography, particularly in that 93-97 run. Of all the members, Ghostface has the best stand out tracks.

Mobb Deep have a pretty good discography as well, with some really dope unreleased shyt.

Those ones immediately come to mind. I love Rae but I never listen to anything non-Cuban Linx.

From a writing perspective, I'd say Rakim. His first 4 albums are crazy. I just don't like the beats for the most part.

Any glaring omissions? Some would argue P.E. and KRS probably.
