...come on let's picture the possibility...
^This. Its a mixture of several things but its mostly Support
- Hip Hop stations support local artist. The majority of the music played on Atlanta radio is from Atlanta artist. Radio stations here like 94.5 and 107.9 take pride in breaking new artist.
- Nightclubs/Strip Clubs support local artist and strip clubs help break new artist. If your song is hot in the strip club it will eventually move to the nightclubs and then to the radio
- Once a song blows up in Atlanta the surrounding cities start playing it and eventually it blows up
- Big named rappers put on smaller named rappers. Most rappers want to be the biggest rapper in their city so they might not sign rappers from their city because they want to stay on top
- All the big name producers are here and they are always looking to break new artist
- Lots of people visit Atlanta and when they come here and hear a song over and over when they go back to their hometown they talk about that particular song
- Generally speaking most rappers support other rappers here
That how it was in New Orleans back in the day, probably still is.
You make a track and take to to radio and radio plays it.
Next thing you know you start doing shows which you can literally do every night.
They have local artist in the city that never left, their careers are confined to the city making music that only locals know.
But the are eating good though.
Lastly, you could take your cd's to the local mom and pops shops and sell it on consignment. Distribution! So you are getting the cd sales and the show money.
The reason the game is so messed up now is because MOST radio stations won't just play a record because it's hot or if the people want to hear it. It's all about Payola and no local indie artist can compete with the majors. Once radio is out of the equation then so are the shows and sales. If you live in Newark NJ you got to go to Hot97 in NY for radio play. Do you really think some guy off the street EVER has a shot of getting play there? No! (Let's forget for a moment that NJ is being blackballed.) Then you wonder why you don't hear much from certain cities or even regions for that matter, they don't have a outlet to be heard.
