Its a mixture of several things but its mostly Support

- Hip Hop stations support local artist. The majority of the music played on Atlanta radio is from Atlanta artist. Radio stations here like 94.5 and 107.9 take pride in breaking new artist.
- Nightclubs/Strip Clubs support local artist and strip clubs help break new artist. If your song is hot in the strip club it will eventually move to the nightclubs and then to the radio

- Once a song blows up in Atlanta the surrounding cities start playing it and eventually it blows up
- Big named rappers put on smaller named rappers. Most rappers want to be the biggest rapper in their city so they might not sign rappers from their city because they want to stay on top
- All the big name producers are here and they are always looking to break new artist
- Lots of people visit Atlanta and when they come here and hear a song over and over when they go back to their hometown they talk about that particular song
- Generally speaking most rappers support other rappers here
^This.

That how it was in New Orleans back in the day, probably still is.
You make a track and take to to radio and radio plays it.
Next thing you know you start doing shows which you can literally do every night.
They have local artist in the city that never left, their careers are confined to the city making music that only locals know.
But the are eating good though.
Lastly, you could take your cd's to the local mom and pops shops and sell it on consignment. Distribution! So you are getting the cd sales and the show money.

The reason the game is so messed up now is because MOST radio stations won't just play a record because it's hot or if the people want to hear it. It's all about Payola and no local indie artist can compete with the majors. Once radio is out of the equation then so are the shows and sales. If you live in Newark NJ you got to go to Hot97 in NY for radio play. Do you really think some guy off the street EVER has a shot of getting play there? No! (Let's forget for a moment that NJ is being blackballed.) Then you wonder why you don't hear much from certain cities or even regions for that matter, they don't have a outlet to be heard.

Its not because of the clubs or strip clubs. Rappers are blowing up off of internet following. The club is playing shyt thats already hot. ATL clubs aren't playing different music than NY clubs

Most of the shyt played in the strip club stays in the strip club.

It has to do with what @Poitier and @Juneya are saying mostly

they just copied the blueprint the bay area laid decades ago.. they support their own, they have an independent hustle and they have outlets that support them i.e. clubs, hood spots, local radio, dj's.

No disrespect but nobody in the A really followed the Bay area outside of Too Short. Remember the Internet wasn't popular back then.

Atl artist figured out the Blueprint themselves because back then generally one had to get through NY to get on. They knew that wouldnt happen so they grinded. The only artist/etc Blueprint that Atlanta rappers used was No Limit, Uncle Luke, Laface and So So Def.

I will say this.
The Bay Area got they own lil world out there.
They have local artist who (somewhat) support each other and stay grinding independently.

But it's crazy to me how LA cats have no idea who these dudes are outside of Mac Dre.
names?
