Serious answer is that some people are able to accept that there's a lot of randomness in the world. For example, if you are educated in Biology, you understand the incredible complexity of DNA and just how much data is stored in DNA, and it becomes obvious that sometimes when cells are copying so much DNA data, it goes wrong and causes effects like birth defects, etc.
As a result of the chaotic and random nature of our physical world, bad things sometimes happen like hurricanes and pandemics and viruses and birth defects, and not every bad thing has to be a punishment.
It's impossible to reason with people who want to find a reason behind everything. With enough imagination, you can always come up with a reason why tragedy X is a punishment for Group/Person Y doing some bad thing and it's impossible to disprove something that is in its essence imaginary.
It's also not disprovable that the physical laws of the universe were created by God, so there's no point in arguing with a theist. I'm agnostic for what it's worth. Just live a good moral life, incorporate wisdom from whatever texts you find it.
