Nobody predicted dallas in 11 or san antonio 14.
Come on man, by that time, both those franchises were in the middle of over a decade (2 in SA's case) of sustained success. Will you be able to predict every NBA champion every year? Of course not. But the concept of parity isn't just about who wins the championship. It's about ALL the teams in the league. Please do not try to convince me Dallas or San Antonio came out of nowhere when they won titles. Every year in the NFL, there will be a team or two equivalent to the current Detroit Pistons or Sacramento Kings who just put it all together and make the playoffs. The middle/lower tiers are constantly shuffling and the top tier a little bit too. I think there are only 1 or 2 NFC teams (Detroit and Minnesota?) who haven't played in the SB since the 90s. EVERY other one has.

Except Flacco in 2012 but yeah, I know that stat. The great players/teams eat in the NFL for long periods of time, this is true. That's just the nature of any sport/competition - the absolute best will rise to the top and stay there for a while barring catastrophic injury. But even if your franchise is great for decades, you can still be knocked out by a flash in the pan or a team on the rise. Even the P*ts went a full decade between their two different runs of SB's without winning a title because they kept getting knocked out by teams who were better that DAY, but not better as overall franchises.

And even given that you generally know who the 2 or 3 best teams will be leading up to any given season, whatever other predictions you make are going to be total crap shoots. Every single year, there are players and teams who rise and fall dramatically in the NFL. In the NBA, you have a pretty clear picture before any games are even played who is going to the best, then the next best, then the next best after that. And barring catastrophic injury, it is incredibly rare that any team or player dramatically over- or under-performs their preseason expectations
This is true but when have teams like Pittsburgh, the NY Giants, Philly or even Dallas been bad for years? All of them have been in the mix consistently since the Steelers 4 peat, I don't actually recall anytime those 4 have been Jacksonville awful. Even the Raiders were not awful until 2003 when AL went off the reservation.

There's like 70% roster turn over every year. It's the same reason football has become harder to follow. Hard to care about your guys when your team cuts everyone that isnt a qb/wr/all pro after 3 years.
Like basketball is any different. 2 years ago the Rockets reached the wcf. Only harden Ariza and Capella are the only players currently on the roster that played in that wcf only 2 seasons ago

The Cavs Warriors were a forgone conclusion from the beginning of the last two seasons. People pretend that Boston will win the East, but by the time of Cavs/Warriors part 4, people will say that was a forgone conclusion as well. Anyone expect the Atlanta Falcons to dominate the league last year and nearly win it all? No.

Yeah I mean it's not perfect parity, that's not the argument I'm making. I just think it's better parity than the other most popular sports we love in this country. But you're right - when you have smart people running the same organization consistently the same way for decades, they'll be less vulnerable to the ebbs and flows. There will never be perfect competitive balance in any sport unless you find a way to cap the number of years the smartest owners/GMs/coaches can run a team, or the best players can play for a team, which would suck the fun out of it for fans.

And even those teams you named have had bad years from time to time. Dallas might be consistently "not bad" but they are also (since their SB run) a consistent running joke of unlikely, untimely failures. Philly was pretty meh for a while before McNabb showed up.

The Patriots are the ultimate NFL outlier. You are taking New England and making them commonplace. Stop.
Yep, and even they are a fluke INT on the worst play call in NFL history + a 25 point comeback away from having won zero rings since 2004...

Rockets made it to wcf finals by overcoming a 20 point deficent in the 3rd quarter on the road game 6. Nfl comparison?
