Then the winner starts at home makes no sense. the wildcard can get 3 home games in a row while if the division winner sweeps they only get one . ( for instance Texas is at home vs orioles , they win then they get 2 straight versus the yanks at home. )

I believe the explanation was that they set the schedule before deciding whether to start the new format this year but really wanted to start it next year.

So they didn't want to have to waster travel days or something.
