Seems in line with the Miltonic theme of a Satanic anti-hero that was common in romantic literature of the 19th century, most notably in Shelley’s Prometheus Unbound, Frankenstein, Byron’s Manfred, and possibly Chants de Maldoror by Lautreamont.
