In med school, I took an elective called "Stress", foolishly thinking I was going to learn about meditation and yoga. Instead the professor spent 6 weeks proving that being poor or a minority literally destroys your health on a molecular level, and I think about that every day.

cc: @JWLuiza that class was really ahead of its time. Everyone should have to take it.

Stress, Immune Function, and Health: The Connection https://amazon.com/dp/0471241814/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_dIiUEbR44Q36X. This is the book he wrote, I have no gain in the promotion of it. It was just an amazing class!

For those asking: I found 8 of his easy-to understand lectures on the effect of stress on your health (and tips for how to cope with it) organized online for free! https://alephne.org/templates/articlecco_cdo/aid/4713968/jewish/Stress-Management-Video-Presentation.htm

And another book for everyone (again, I have no connection to this!) but think these are some tools we have right now to help buffer what is wild systematic inequality. Be well all.

WOW! The Post-Gazette wrote about him TODAY! He really is like Mr. Rogers meets Bill Nye. Awesome. https://post-gazette.com/local/neighborhood/2020/05/11/Us-column-Bruce-Rabin-stress-coping-pandemic-loneliness-UPMC/stories/202005050123 via

I am so humbled by the stories, vulnerability, and expertise of everyone who contributed to this thread. Thank you

Another update from Dr. Rabin, who really needs to get a twitter : free guided imagery for coping:

I’ll add another update on our call Dr. Rabin said that medical school deans have been calling him asking for his curriculum. Never underestimate the power of social media to create change. It’s so apparent this topic NEEDS TO BE TAUGHT to future healthcare providers! Thank you.

YouTube lectures on the effect of profound stress on the immune system and tools to try and combat it for health:

When I say molecular level, this is what I mean. Powerful.

No study on this but I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of people die early deaths because of it. The stresses of life. Commutes to work. Constantly having to take one more course so you can be more employable. You get married. You have kids. Now you are tightly bound to a rat race which will deplete your vitality. Add to that being black in America. And the fears and anxieties that come from it.

Y’all stay wise out there.
