Up until 1982, Unemployment benefits were not tax. But Regan changed all that. Then he did it again in 1987. And he did it in the midst of passing historical tax cuts to rich people. Democrats would subsequently have the power to reverse it multiple times over the past 40 years and didn't. So even during the financial crisis and covid, the government was getting their pound of flesh. And it's bad enough, the benefits in some stats are a joke compared to what a person was previously making (in North Carolina the max unemployment is less than $400 a week regardless of what you were making and for how long).

Too many selfish people in this country. If someone is working, they don't want anyone to get any benefits because they're not working. But as soon as they're in the same position, they want people to feel sorry for them. Anytime Republicans pass something that hurts peoples pockets, the Democrats don't change it.

The Regan era, flooding neighborhoods with drugs, taxed people on unemployment, deregulated everything and gave massive tax cuts to the rich. And republicans voted for George Bush afterwards..... and he LOST to Clinton because he knew he had to raise taxes again.
