They usually change a good piece of the core enough that it feels somewhat fresh. ex. Zelda is mostly about dungeons. In OoT as it's first transition to 3D it was about exploration and compelling story. Majora's Mask's main draw was the time aspect, and how you had to complete those dungeons revolving around a 3 Day system. Wind Waker focused on exploration again, but off-land instead and in the seas. Dungeons were adapted to fit the island nature of the lands and also had a few extras tied along with that.

As it's basic, yes, Nintendo just makes the same game, but how you play it changes up whenever it can. Super Mario Galaxy/Bros/64 are all different games at some point but are really close enough to all be similar. It's that Nintendo magic that keeps it's first party games familiar yet refreshing - something franchises like CoD can learn from.

I didnt realize it until these past 2 generations

But the fact of the matter is whats the problem if the games are critically acclaimed?

Nintendo has never had a problem giving us good games

Most companies make the same games over and over again.

And when they DO try something different all anybody does is whine about wanting the same old franchises back.

And if you want to be real about it the Mario games have evolved much more in the same span of time than most FPS and sports games have.

I dont think they will get away with it so easily this gen. THe new games they revealed really look like an HD version of the WII games (especially mario kart) and they arent being released till NEXT YEAR. They still havent even revealed a traditional 3d mario, zelda, or metroid. Their conference was extra weak
