How Important Is Getting Raises To You?

My current job has only paid me one raise in 2 years 3 months

Its not because im bad at my job, im amazing. I have a lot of experience and hold a few certifcations as well as a degree. And ive worked my way up to being next in line to be foreman here. I make good money now...

Its because they only pay ONE raise a year. And they gave us a sob story as to why they couldnt pay one this past year (working for private employers aint all peaches and cream brehs)

I kept my mouth shut because i was getting great experience and getting to work on great projects.. So it balanced out for me..

But ive hit the point where im frustrated and its starting to show. Getting raises is too important to me, i cant overlook it anymore.

How do you guys feel about this? Could you work the same job without being paid raises?

Change companies, that in-house raise shyt won't be as much as you can get on the open market

A yearly raise should be a requirement at any decent job, unless you're:

Underpeforming

Or

The Company is riding an economic downturn

If it's a decent company you should be getting yearly evals. Those should help you build a case as to why you deserve a raise.

Keep a file of every complement you've received (related to work), Milestones achieved, goals met, projects completed, times you've gone the extra mile etc. It will make your value obvious to your manager in a way that has a paper trail.

Ask to have a meeting about your progress with your manager, lay out your case and discuss what can be done. Your manager will likely use one of several tactics if he/she doesn't want to give you a raise:

1. "We already have a budget this year can't spend new money."

2. they don't believe your value as an asset warrants a raise and will state this in so many words.

3. Changes the subject or deflects.

If it's 2 or 3 then get your resume ready, u need to switch jobs.

If it's 1 Work with them to develop an interim solution like a partial raise until the next fiscal year.

Either way it is important to have all this stuff IN WRITING or you're asking to get effed over.

Edit: if you're aware of others getting raises and you are getting stonewalled, go to HR. At this point you need to be documenting EVERYTHING. Going to HR puts a target on your back so they will be looking for any excuse to fire you. You should be prepared to lawyer up if it gets too crazy
Bigger companies will settle out of court for discrimination rather than take the PR hit.
