@ taking Gallup seriously. They had Romney up 10 a couple of weeks before the election. They were so bad in 2012 they stopped doing polls for years.

Gallup has been known as one of the least accurate major polls.
If you want to understand why this 55% is possible and also become increasingly nihilistic towards humanity, read the comments.
You got to understand that half the population lives and breaths Fox News and a whole entirely different ecosystem than we live in.
After I read that shyt, I feel myself cynically saying "let them go back to work". People don't learn unless they get hit. Once its their grandparents and parents dying then they are suddenly going to have change of heart. It took that wife of that guy in Arizona who died from ingesting fish tank cleaner for that to happen before she gave a mild rebuke of "don't believe everything Trump says".
The only thing making me not 100% sign on to this thinking is that those of us with sense will be impacted.

We are using the wrong behavioural science metrics, the president's approval ratings are always high during a crisis, as Americans stand behind the president no matter what.I'm in a serious bubble both on and off line. Judging by my interactions, Trump's handling of this should be polling in the single digits.
After the crisis, when the fallout hits home, is the real time to check the pulse of the nation. Until then, it's all speculation.

It was really only a matter of time before something tanked the economy and several of our resident "independents," "libertarians," "progressives," and "ADOS" all come out as straight up MAGA Trump supporting Republicans.
I don't think people understand just how unequivocally poor Donald Trump's response to this pandemic truly was or how uniquely horrible this is about to become in this country. And rather than focus on war-time emergency resources and response, this buffoon of a President--who has finally met a crisis he can't send cronies to cover up, but at this point has come to believe he has super powers--want's to ignore experts and see Americans join in sacred Christian union on Easter Sunday and get their asses back to work around the same time the pandemic will peak in critical numbers.

This fool had a whole shadow foreign policy in the Ukraine trying to pin election interference on the DNC and prove his own intelligence agencies wrong, but now this psychopath is almost determined to prove he's smarter than doctors and health experts on a fukking virus and do whatever he wants with a damn pandemic on his hands.
