I think he is being considered a hero to other transsexuals to look up to.
Statistically transgender people have extremely low life expectancy in this country. So I'd definitely be scared to come out as a transgender person. Bruce is making it okay for them to be who they are...
Their lifestyle might be the reason for that. Drug abuse prostitution homelessness etc. trannys aren't like rich gay white men living in Chelsea.

But you have to admit their stories are different
People have seen Bruce as a Male for 40 years
Of course lifestyles play a part. They get murdered pretty often, Suicide from being tormented, and prostitution. But the question is why are those so common for transgender women? When you get disowned by your family, or turn to drugs from depression, or become a prostitute because no one will hire a tranny, get murdered because someone was embarrassed they fukked you... Life expectancy gets pretty low...
